    Water Heater

No pic, but..Anne- a "floodlight" bulb/lamp is thick glass and does not shatter and leave shards like a incandescent bulb. Less than 1/2 of bulb is in the water on the underside of the float(styrofoam) and the top (metal/electrical) part is on the top side of float. With horses not having...

    Water Heater

I tested the concept and it does work. I took a "floodlamp" light bulb (think it is 100 watt) and a small piece of 2" styrofoam. Made a hole and screwed the bulb through the hole into a light cord so that the styrofoam now creates a float. (wood would also work) Placed the bulb in a 1/2 plastic...

Best way to pregnancy check late term mares

I would say feeling foal movement would also be 100%. You can feel most at 6 mo's and all by 7-8 mo's.

    Simple feeder idea

Whitney - They are a very simple design. The two ends made on the ground. 4 cross pieces (for roof) put in. 2 studs along back. Screw on sheeting. Size is 6'x9' with roof 9'x9'. Size was dictated by material on hand .

WHY is my "frost free" outside barn water spigot

While on this subject I will add another way these can freeze and my solution. (this will not be the problem of the post-too early in the year) By late winter frost in our area can go down 4 to 6 feet. The spring was very wet and the water table came above the frost line. Since water will only...

    winter foaling

Most important for the baby's first hour is to get totally dried. USE a hairdryer and it will be fluffy and warm. After it starts nursing within an hour or two, the little one will do fine . Keep a coat on it. Our "cold" weather foals were born with winter coats, so they can handle cold temps...

    Simple feeder idea

This simple/cheap feeder idea can be used where studs are exposed, be it run-in/shed/barn. It is "pagewire" fencing fastened across the face of the studs. I like to use slats and ensure the wire ends are covered to avoid pokes. This way the fine "yummy" leafage falls to the base , rather then...

    retaining a foal question

There is mention of all the foaling costs that the buyer is/intends to incur. Just a comment - I foaled out 11 mares this year and fortunately did not have problems, but it did not cost me a dollar. I do not give the 5/7/9 mo shots. All foals are doing very well.

    retaining a foal question

The buyer knew she was in foal with potentially extra costs, and there were no discussions bout you covering them, but only getting the foal at 4 mo's, therefore I would amiably review it as that. If the insists on you assuming all obligations, you could expose yourself to a very big bill if...

    Posting for a friend

Have I not read here that the reddishness of the snow will increase with higher protein diets???

    What is sharing??

Marion - For winter they are across the fence of one group of mares and during the summer they were adjacent to the big group of mares that were all breeding. These are just the most gentlemenly boys that kids can play with at any time.

    What is sharing??

I always like to see the horse groups getting along at meal time. These are 6 senior boys (3 stallions and 3 geldings) This is Annie and her buddies. She is rarely seen without a cat or two curled up with her. These are 10 weanlings that love their oats. (by the way, I feed whole oats ...

    Tank De-icers

Why Not run cords?? I use a few hundred feet of cords to get power to out sheds/buildings. Never had a problem. I ensure that any connections are off the ground and stay dry. (Connection in cement block with pail over top, never moves). My water heaters and lights at any time likely use less...

Is it possible for an 8 month old filly..

If she knows little about horses, I suspect she she could readily confuse mounting with play, rather than "real" breeding.

    Bots

After a few big frosts, I dewormed the horses using "ivermectin" based paste to get the Bots. Going into fall and winter there appear to be thousnads of eggs on the front legs, and yet after deworming, I will only see a small number ( 1 or 2 per dump) of the guys. I clean poop daily, so I see...

    Dewormer costs

Another post made reference to the availability of ivermectin dewomer paste which is $3.39 on the Jeffers site. How do these tubes compare to the tubes that I pay $18. Cdn for? Just used up 9 tubes today. I use about 30 tubes a year and that would save about $400. What is wrong with this picture?

    Dogs and arthritis

A very senior Golden Retriever arrived at our place (nobody was looking for her) and she had difficulty getting up. Put her on MSM (1 tsp per day) and she has been doing very well for the past 2 1/2 years. She continues to trot around the yard to be wherever I am. The vet had looked at her when...

What kind of tool should I use?

If you use the flexible warer line pipe (1/2 or 3/4") you can slit that with a knife and then twist it over the cord. You won't get a staight cut, but it wil curl together nicely.
