    Face abcess

I was wondering if maybe her sinus was still clear and draining this morning and causing her to chew. She has been chewing for a couple minutes right after I clear it. But of course I didn't even check her nose for discharge this morning. The abscess is itchy, she scratches it on things and...

    Face abcess

This morning when I went to give her her medicine, she was chewing without anything in her mouth. She wasn't grinding her teeth, she was just chewing as though she were eating, but she wasn't. I opened her mouth and looked to see if there was anything stuck in there, but I couldn't find...

    Face abcess

I was able to flush the sinus today. I had to hold her head, with one arm over her head and then under her mouth holding her head still and against my body, and after she learned that she could walk around like that but not move in relation to me, she stood still and was relatively calm as I put...

    Halter sizes

My minis (both under 32") fit in foal halters (nylon). The mini sized nylon halters from regular stores are too big. I don't know if leather halters are sized differently, though.

    Face abcess

So she got her first dose of this round of antibiotics and I cleaned the abscess with a sponge that was wet with warm water. As soon as I got it wiped off she looked so much better. I took the syringe with saline solution and managed to squirt it in the abscess a little bit, and did get more...

    New horse

I rode her again today, this time with the saddle. She kinda acted exactly as I expected, lol. Didn't want to move when I wanted her to (I was told to invest in spurs when I got her, but I don't think I'm experienced enough to use spurs) and when I finally got her to move she didn't want to go...

    Face abcess

I called the vet this evening and gave him the update. He gave me 2 more bottles of the antibiotic and a syringe with instructions to give the antibiotic 2x a day like before, but also flush her abscess and sinus (through the abscess) with saline solution once per day. Hope this works.

    Face abcess

Sunday morning was her last dose. Yesterday it was gross and stinking again Called the vet last night and he didn't answer. I will call again tonight. I don't know if he will want to come and clean it again and try a stronger antibiotic since the puss never went away while she was on the...

    New horse

It's the right rung on the buckle (it's actually supposed to go through the top rung the first loop, and then the bottom rung for the second loop and to buckle it - I looked it up after asking here) , it won't tighten correctly and can't be buckled if I put it through the top one. It just looks...

    New horse

Is this the proper way to use a cinch with the buckle? Also, a picture from our walk today. There are so many of these flowers and they're so pretty (and they smell good!)

    New horse

I should mention that I rode her bareback yesterday. Today I bought a cinch and off billets. Tried it on her, and the cinch fits perfect, and I think the saddle fits better, too. Without the pad (or cinch) there is 2-finger width of clearance between her withers and the horn. With the pad, it...

    New horse

I rode her today. Just for 2-3 minutes because of her weight. I recently learned about carrot stretches. Do they help build muscle?

    slow shedding normal?

I think it's normal. My Arab mix is already done shedding, and the minis are just starting to really shed. My filly wasn't done shedding until August last year, and then her winter coat started growing back right away. The mare sheds out faster, though (maybe done in June?)

    New horse

She's only in the yard for a few hours per day, the rest of the time she is in the pasture. Her withers are kind of hollow at the moment, so she probably will take a wider gullet when she fills out. I may buy a 'new' saddle anyway, this one was used when I got it 10 years ago, and it's just a...

I know why Belle is treating Lexie " rude " do horses try people to??

Horse's will definitely test you. ALL the time, or even every time you're around, for some horses. They need to know who the boss is, and they will constantly test you to make sure you're still up for it. Since it was at feeding time, she probably was testing you, but horses will also head-butt...

    Learning to trim hoofs

Did the vet explain why he wanted you to vaccinate twice a year? You are paying him for it, and he may just want the extra cash (though hopefully not...) My horses are vaccinated once a year, and that's all I've heard of them needing. As for hooves, you could go to some classes and learn how to...

    New horse

I've increased her grain a little, since I've started her in work. Took her for a walk the other day, just went one lap around the crop field next to my property. It's a hill, so I did take her to the top of it instead of just walking around it, to work her back a little more. Today, I tried to...

I was WRONG about Belle wanting a horse friend!

Probably just sorting out dominance. Some can very mean about it. They should settle down in a few days.

    Face abcess

I'm not flushing it. He didn't want me to do anything with the abscess other than giving her the antibiotic.
