    Wheee! Driving hours 2023

I am in the same boat with my 4 year old gelding so I have been doing some research on that exact topic. I really liked the advice of an older book that recommended doing it (either on the ground or in the cart) over a period of 8 weeks, starting with two short sessions a day, morning and...

Has Anyone Switched From Riding Horses to Minis?

Welcome! I switched from riding to driving minis years ago purely because I did not own my own big horse and the neighbor had minis. Since then I have absolutely fallen in love with driving. I used to ride several times a week, but now I don't care for it anymore, even though I have big horses...

    Edelweiss Training Journal

Absolutely in love with this little yearling filly! 😍 Before and after. The difference that only two months of maturing and conditioning makes. Plus the lack of a winter coat.

    Edelweiss Training Journal

I am glad you enjoy them!! Thank you! :) Gaston is nearly ready to be started in the cart. I am happy to see this view! It's been a long time coming as we couldn't really do anything harness related until he got his teeth done, but now that we finally started, he is coming along quickly! He...

    Edelweiss Training Journal

Thank you! Depending on how large my show string is, or if I am going for year end awards, a full show season usually means about 4 local shows, Area Regionals or Congress, and Nationals. In 2021, when I was showing A&R, I did 8 shows from Mar-Sept. That was when I was closer to them though...

    Edelweiss Training Journal

Spring is finally here to stay and the horses are enjoying themselves! I still have a few more to clip, but so far we have no shows scheduled besides helping clients, which has been enjoyable. Hopefully next year we can get back to a full show schedule though! Everyone is training very, very well.

Once again, it has been a long time since I posted! Not much is new here, just time for spring clipping. I am hoping to be able to show next month, might be our only show this year, we will see, but everyone is training very well.

    Bit/Training Suggestions

Ok, Let me send the notes over now! I have a couple thoughts based on them and I can send some links to more places with mini bits. Have you looked at Chrysalis Acres? You can find a good assortment of bits in mini size now. https://chrysalisacres.com/shop/Bits-in-Mini-Sizes-c105005049

    Bit/Training Suggestions

@Kelly I would definitely change the bit. Is he grabbing it at all? If you would like, I can share my glossary of bits and their uses for different situations from the Boyd Exell clinic. Bits are his the first things he looks at. Practically every lesson session started with changing the bit and...

    Edelweiss Training Journal

@MaryFlora Yes, and she does have those mischievous blue eyes! It is not funny when you are on the receiving end though. She is much much better now. And yes he is very much like an old time Saddlebred! Or what Hackneys and modern Saddlebreds want to be. Evidently they are crossing Dutch horses...

    Edelweiss Training Journal

This horse is just so incredible! I didn't think it possible that he could impress me so much, but he already has, even more than my beloved Arabs and that says a lot! Here he is playing in the field yesterday.

    Plus 1 🤣

Congratulations! You are going to have fun with him! I too have learned to ask for blanket size to get a better gauge of their height and overall size.

Both girls are already coming along so quickly. The results of groundwork will never cease to amaze me and it helps that both have excellent minds. Dream is already not kicking and picked up backing and hindquarter yields smoothly in her first session. Star is leading and lets you come and pet...

    Edelweiss Training Journal

@MaryFlora Well they are furry but not so darling yet! Lol, Miss Blue Eyes likes to kick you. About to post more on them. The streamlined look is pretty different! I like it too! You are right, it is very elegant. He was not stalled and there was snow on the ground where he was, so where that...

    Edelweiss Training Journal

Thank you! Yes, he is a special one! @MaryFlora , he came from Illinois and he has not been clipped so I don't know if that is a summer coat but it is gorgeous! A few pictures of him today, and some minis!

    Horse show stall doors

Hahaha, that would not be a good idea!! Maybe that was a bad way to describe it. The steel mesh that they can see through was what I meant. There is a barn at Nationals with stalls similar to these.

    Horse show stall doors

I don't usually worry about it if I am only going to be at a show for 1-2 nights, but any longer and I have horses who need to see other horses and what is going on. Putting up a temporary stall front is much easier than stalling two together. If you are on there, look around on the Facebook...
