    Edelweiss Training Journal

Sally is really doing so well now. She is ready to move on to obstacle training as she is advanced in groundwork and showmanship with a finished right pivot. Sidepassing is starting to flow and her pull turn is coming along as she has learned to accept and use contact which was a huge thing to...

    Grooming question

Unfortunately, that is a common myth that has been debunked by numerous professional studies. When I work my halter horses in the summer, I always hose them off afterwards and they appreciate it. Cooling them off is very important as high body temperatures can be dangerous for them. Here are...

General Update. Thanks to family who came to help finish the fence, my horses can finally have the front yard "pasture" and they are really enjoying it. Sally is coming along very well. Got up to a working trot with her in hand and she was nervous but held herself together so well, staying light...

Yes she does look like a Cinnamon! I used to ride a sorrel named that. Thank you! It is pretty nice here. Had a beautiful session with Sally today. I'll try not to write a book about it, but I brought the backsaddle out again. Started by haltering her, putting the backsaddle on the ground and...

Thank you! Forgot a link. https://morningstarfarmdai.wixsite.com/cedar-springs-stable?fbclid=IwAR1BtfL4rIn_vfZd3FEHwzo_osMfZXZtKFD2DZT-m0bU7FC2RbPQuY4dbuk Yes, that is why I do so much groundwork, especially with a horse that has had "training." It really helps you and the horse come to know...

    Edelweiss Training Journal

I know it's been awhile since I updated on Sally, but after 2.5 weeks, I finally found the "footprint" of previous training and it's a big one. We have a long, long, way to go. I would not be surprised if she needs 6 months of groundwork before she sees the cart. She is intermediate in...

    Showing in 2022

This is very common at all State Fairs and premium shows. I did it all the time when I showed dairy goats if there was prize money involved. It can be required in other shows too though. For example, you have to fill out a W-9 before futurity at Nationals or World. AMHR is no longer an...

    Edelweiss Training Journal

It's been another week and now I am really starting to see some improvement! Sally is shaping up nicely, has a lot more muscle tone and has learned to soften and use her whole body in working. She is intermediate in groundwork and basic in showmanship, starting to refine her pivot, almost...

That is what I am wondering. I don't think so. I wish. I might have the vet weigh him with her tape next time she comes out. He could be every bit of 370. He is big barrelled and can be a hard keeper if not fed enough, but most of mine eat as much or more than a full size horse anyway. I believe...

Yes!! This is so true! According to the weigh tape, my 34" gelding is 370lbs, and he is certainly not fat, but he does have a foundation style frame. My 2yr old 36" halter gelding is 350lbs and looks ok, could stand to put on a bit more weight to be in full show condition, if I were taking him...

Can't get much more accurate than that! I wish I knew of one. The weigh tape says my 34" gelding is 370lbs and my 32" is 245. Both are not fat but I don't know how accurate that weigh tape is! I don't think Billy is fat at all! I think he looks just right in that picture. He is pretty cute too...

How does your vet weigh the minis? Does he use a scale or weigh tape? My newest thing is finding out how accurate weigh tapes are lol.

Just groundwork, a bit of trotting, and a good diet! That is why she has more muscle tone and her neck has started to slim down too.

Thank you. I have been blessed with some beautiful horses. I try to be very much in tune with them. It is quite a feeling when they reciprocate and we are truly in sync. Sally has been in training for a week now. Picture from tonight. She is shaping up nicely and is close to intermediate level...

No, I wish! They are beautiful! I have a friend who used to groom for a big Welsh hunter pony barn and that is where they were bad about heights. I have another friend who used to breed and train Welsh for carriage shows. They were so pretty!!

I can't imagine getting upset over VSE's where there are not often any other height breakdowns. I am not picky about where my horses measure as I believe they need to be good enough to win regardless of the fact that some horses in there might be too tall. That is where it came from! Quite a...

Yes Kelly! You would probably end up shorter! @Marsha Cassada I don't think horses get shorter so one of those heights is wrong! Lol Hard to tell with no scale but they look to be pretty close in height. There is a huge difference between my 32.5 and 34" geldings.

    Your Drive Day

You got that right! Mostly shorter! I think you could say they have it down to a science because I don't even know all that they do. Or want to lol. Oh wow! I can't even imagine lowest point of the back! Yes! I'll take last hair of the mane! It is a bit ridiculous at first look. It's been...

Oh you'd be surprised!! Lol There are so many factors from clipping to head height to leg placement.

Oh I already am! Those eyes are the first thing I noticed when I first saw a Salsa horse. I love her more every time I work with her. She trusts me a lot more now. Day 4 of Groundwork. She is advancing quickly through basic level. She is much softer, still a little neck stiff, but getting...
