    HPR 2024

She sure does look like she's in a hurry!

    Getting there!

My mare had her foal already this year, but I noticed a lot of foal movement in the couple days before. Hopefully that means she is close. I don't usually check milk color, but since my mare was already leaking I did this year. The night she foaled it was whitish, but not what I expected it to...

    Cart mounted shooting?

Hmm, archery you need 2 hands, but if you could drive with one hand you could shoot with the other. Just teaching your horse to handle the shooting should be no problem, but I've never seen it as an organized sport. The mounted shooting people have been very chill and would probably let you do a...

    We have a foal!

Yea, the foal camo is kind of cool, I haven't seen that on a baby before. I am pretty sure that the mare is a brown based buckskin, so the colors of her foals have been a little interesting. Last years colt clipped out almost black, then turned a mousy gray, and is now doing whatever the heck...

    We have a foal!

I let him outside for the first time today, and his eyes are a very strange color. Not sure if that means he is a dilute, or if they are going to be partial blue.

    We have a foal!

So this little guy was born friday night. What do you think I should name him? Also, I thought he was bay, but the coloring on his face seems similar to some of the color on her face...any chance he might be buckskin?

Herd bound cute duo. Any suggestions??

Actually, maryflora has a good point. Do you want to keep both? If the other guy is not really kid safe you might consider finding a new home for him. Once his buddy is gone the safer one will calm down. (It will take time) You already have a friend for him so he won't be alone. And as far as I...

Herd bound cute duo. Any suggestions??

I have been told that you need to separate them so they can't see each other until he is over it. Which is at least a few weeks. You might try separating them to feed them, gradually increasing the distance between them when you work with them, or adding a 3rd. But I know people who have had to...

Mare seems to be starting a little early this year

Yes, 241 days this year, vs 363 last year. It's a colt, I think he's bay.

She is dripping milk tonight. Hopefully not much longer.

    hip dysplasia

This post is from 2006... the person only posted twice ever, and the last time they were on the site at all was 2007. My guess is that no, they are not on here anymore. Sorry about that. You can try making your own post and see if anyone else has any advice or has gone through something similar.

    Mare is leaking milk

Sheesh, I've never seen it before, I hoped someone had. Thanks. I have noticed that she is smaller in the morning and fills up more at night, but I wasn't really checking that close in the middle of the night to see why. It's going to be tough to tell when she's about to foal if she starts like...

    Mare is leaking milk

So this is new to me. Last night my mare looked very close to foaling. Her bag was maybe not totally full, but pretty close to it. So I started foal watch. Around midnight she lay down to sleep, and when she got up her bag was nowhere close to foaling, and her leg was all wet. I'm guessing that...

Returning to light work after foaling?

I think my colt is half miniature horse and half bottle rocket... 🤣

Returning to light work after foaling?

Really, I wouldn't consider it safe until you can restrain the foal. If you have help and one person can work on halter training while you work with the mare it's probably fine now. Once the foal ties, you can teach her patience while tied as long as you stay close with the mare. The exercise is...

Mare seems to be starting a little early this year

332 days, I think. I was able to look through last years pictures and I think she has some time to go still but maybe not much.

Returning to light work after foaling?

There are a couple things to think about. Some mares lose a lot of weight from nursing and if so you wouldn't want to add any extra "work" on top of that. Though from the pictures it doesn't look like that will be an issue for her. Some mommas are a little nervous and overprotective, she could...

Sounds like a hoof or nose to the bladder to me.

Is it possible to get all the loose hair off your shedding mini?

Longer daylight hours are definitely good. I don't mind so much in the summer when the days are long anyway, but it was strange in winter when it was getting dark around 4pm.
