    Fun Horse Facts

Commanche can be viewed to this day, at Dyche Hall, U Kansas. He was said to be 29 when he colicked out at Ft Riley, Kansas, where his remaining days were lived in comfort. Horses which were uninjured from the battle are thought to have been taken by the Indian band. They left Commanche who...

    Your Drive Day

I'll take your word for it Marsha; I have not driven a horse. It is not even universal to leave a halter on a riding horse under the bridle; but here is an old boy who talks about this topic. It is sort of shaming to notice that the bit usually gets applied with help from a thumb through the...

    Poo Poo Crazy

I was intrigued by this sulky image from Kelly. It's the only sulky with independent suspension that I have seen. It apparently originates with Toad Hill Miniature Horses (Australia) and is an extremely efficient design. It looks like stainless too, so I bet it would be spendy. It would be a...

    Your Drive Day

It seems to be the custom in these parts: halter first saddle & pad, then bridle over it to ride my horse.

    Gardening

I can handle endless quantities of news about orchids that are hardy! But hardy in Sydney does not mean hardy in arrid SW Oklahoma, I fear....

What stall flooring do you use?

No personal experience in keeping a barn dry. But the good word is, if there is a prevailing slope, no matter how slight, a trench on the uphill side, with ends pointing outwards and downslope, filled with grit, even sharp sand, can divert the flooding rather well

    BOO Senior Feed

"Stormy is out on dead winter pasture from 9-4pm with unlimited Timothy hay (and coastal, but they prefer the Timothy) about 3-4 pounds, he splits it with Breezy. No hay nets. He is separated by himself and I do feed twice daily. This is the total of what I feed him daily:" 2 pounds Alfalfa hay...

    G'day from Ballarat, Victoria

Good'ay, Cobber! Since watching an Australian TV series or two, Ballarat rolls easily off the tongue!

    CHOKE!!

I feed carrots every day to three [full-sized] horses. I notice there are carrots & carrots. I prefer them about finger to thumb size in diameter. My wife cuts the big heavy carrots in two or three. They are 2 inches in diameter or more, and are tough going - the horses need to set them back...

    CHOKE!!

I have been feeding out 1-4 lb of carrots a day for some months, since I found they often run cheaper than apples, and are better appreciated. My horse gets 2 decent scoops of horse feed too. Never had a choke, but these are horses standing 15 hands high.

    Trail Camera

I had trouble finding a sagebrush sparrow with any breast speckle. Here it is - the speckle is not pronounced: Here is a Brown Thrasher with much stronger speckle:

    Posting Video Help Needed

I saw a .mov file from HersheyMint I downloaded it, but I needed to load another 'codec' to view it. I am thinking some sites may be uncomfortable with .mov format so I converted it to .mv4 format which is widely accepted with a free trial converter (sorry about the ad.) I think you will maybe...

    Thunder Cycle

Not my rig - I have an ancient sulky rig with wire spoke wheels, wooden shafts and no swingle-tree, and a horse often used for carriage driving - a Morgan - and a carriage harness in webbing from an Amish harness-maker: but this trio has never met each other in action.

    Thunder Cycle

Here is an irish pony cart - as you can see, there appears to be no swingle-tree.

    Thunder Cycle

It finally dawned on me: if the traces are fixed to the cart, it will swing side to side as the horse pulls first with one shoulder then the other. The pivot of the swingle-tree in the middle keeps the cart pointed in the desired direction.

    Thunder Cycle

Dumb question. Your cart is provided with a swingletree or singletree. It looks like the rig would work quite well without it. Does it?
