    Weaning time

We've been in some state of drought for 6ish years; our hay has been iffy for much of that time, luckily we put up our own (round bales). During the worst drought year, I did buy some from out of area, in small squares for $12/bale delivered, and they were smaller bales than I usually get...

    Weaning time

It's frightening how much feed has gone up in the last few years, but especially the last year to 18 months. I did recently find a complete feed for $15/bag, so while it's not fortified enough for the small feed rate the minis require, it'll work in the aging saddle horses' diet, as they'll get...

    Weaning time

Oats are unfortified and like 50% starch, so would be going backwards from Omolene. A good senior feed would be a better choice than oats, if you aren't stuck on Purina, another brand may have a one and done product that would work for you. I've used Triple Crown Senior for all ages, but it...

    Boarding single mini challenges?

I don't board (any more), but over the fence buddies is often enough for many equines, as they can see and communicate wtih their "friends".

    Weaning time

Conceivably a good senior could be fed to any age, but a complete senior has a high feeding rate, so may not be appropriate for easier keeping equines, with it's higher feeding rate to meet the needs of all in a group. I have 3 feeds here, as I have 3 different levels of needs with horses...

    Weaning time

I don't have access to Purina Senior, so I have not seen the warning on the label, so no idea why it's there. My comment was specifically addressing the mare. Foals/growing horses should be on a growth formula or a ration balancer along with forage, depending on their caloric needs with few...

    Weaning time

Personal opinion, I'd never feed Omolene 200 or 300 to any horse, let alone a miniature; too high in carbs, especially starch. Since you can get Purina, look to see if they have Purina Senior Active (blue bag); good amount of calories with a much lower carb load; probably only need 1-2# daily...

    Weaning time

How much feed is she currently getting? And, what is it? Might be able to reduce some, which would help with dry up without dropping too many calories; if she's no longer needing to make milk, her calorie needs have decreased, so might be able to decrease the feed some to help with dry up...

    Weaning time

It's possible it's just a case of her udder being uncomfortable, as they'll fill a bit at weaning; do not express milk, as that will make dry up take longer, do decrease her hard feed to help with dry up, do take her for walks to help any discomfort (can also hold cool compress against udder...

    That is awesome.

    Intro to new mini?

I might mix two seniors such as yours as there would be less chance of shenanigans, but won't risk it with younger horses that still have enough zip to be silly. My half-Arab gelding was fast friends with my first mini, they never shared a space, except when the mini escaped his enclosure...

    Intro to new mini?

I also do no advocate mixing sizes. I was given a mini gelding, after his mini brother was killed in a mixed size herd incident. I call it an incident, because it could have been prevented by not mixing; whereas accidents happen despite all you do to keep them safe. [I liken mixing sizes to...

    Weanling woes

Does that scoop hold 2oz by weight or is it a 2oz volume? Just to clarify. 6oz (weight) per day for a mini foal, probably isn't too much, as Calf Manna is essentially the "original" ration balancer, it's just all-species rather than equine specific, so fine for now, but probably need to get...

    Winter feeding? Northern Midwest Winters?

My senior mini stallion is now missing 2-3 molars, could be more now, I've lost count. He gets soaked senior and hay pellets twice a day and has free access to chopped forage, which he rifles for the choicest bits and leaves slobbered on, coarse bits behind (which one of his companions happily...

    Weanling woes

Is that a typo? A 20oz scoop would be a lot of it, as that's 2.5 cups; so would be a lot to start with, even if not too much for growth. Calf Manna is essentially a ration balancer, so has a low feed rate compared to a fortified feed. Typical feed rates for a ration balancer is...

    Winter feeding? Northern Midwest Winters?

That amount recommendation is per day, not per feeding; but that said, if she's not obese on the amount you feed, I wouldn't worry about, until she starts gaining too much. It might be beneficial to divide the meals into multiple slow feeders, so you can put them in different places around...

    2023 crafting for all...

Thank you. I had the purple, fucshia and yellow in my stash, so only needed to find the black and whites, and that wasn't too hard. Also picked a floral with similar colors, hopefully it coordinates, but if it doesn't, it won't be a big deal.

    2023 crafting for all...

Working on a few things lately. Can't remember what I last posted, so will just post the two current projects. First a Christmas table runner, not quite finished, need to add borders, layer and quilt. Second a challenge project for quilt guild. We were given 3 crayons, and need to create a...

    Wild Oats?

Looks like oats to me. If it's not much, it shouldn't be an issue. If your horse has no health issues, it shouldn't be a problem.

    2023 crafting for all...

Finished this little Christmas table runner over the weekend. And, the gnome quilt is done as well, although picture is before quilting and binding (I finished the top in like January, but didn't get around to quilting until now).
