hello, advice needed please on feeding a laminitic.

Safe dieting is to feed 1.5% of current weight or 2% of ideal weight, which ever is greater, then make adjustments as weight is lost. a 36" mini, measured to the last hairs of the mane as minis are measured, rather than top of withers, is probably going to weight in the 300-325# range, maybe...

hello, advice needed please on feeding a laminitic.

Fast weight loss is very dangerous, especially for miniature who are more prone to developing hyperlypedemia than full size horses (I may have spelled that wrong, but it's a fatty liver issue that is deadly). What is the full exact current diet? All the details. How big is the mini (height is...

    2023 crafting for all...

Thank you. They vary. The colorful one is child size, about 40x45". The sheep is bigger, but I can't remember for sure, like 65x75" range. I mostly make lap size and smaller.

    2023 crafting for all...

Had a little time to sew, yesterday, and finished up two quilt tops. Hopefully, I'll be able to go to the quilt guild sewing day next week, and get them layered and ready for quilting.

    Temporary pellet diet for mini

Hay pellets can replace long stem hay pound for pound, perhaps a little less due to less waste.

    Billy

If you get a mirror, get an actual equestrian mirror, they are safer than regular mirrors. [Or make sure, he can't actually touch the mirror.]

    Mini mare unwell

I'm on week two of treating an eye ulcer in a 3 year old gelding. He's not a very cooperative patient for eye med administration, every 4 hours (I get most of them in, but have missed a few on busy days). My vet will only do a catheter in clinic, so I'm treating him myself, so I don't have to...

This has got to be the darkest bay ever

Sometimes they don't have the lighter patches on the body, just the light muzzle is the giveaway to bay. And, when you clip, you remove the colored portion of the shaft, so those light areas could be there, but have been shaved off.

This has got to be the darkest bay ever

The brown/cinnamon color muzzle indicates he is dark bay rather than black. Clipping removes the colored portion of the hair shaft, so not a good indicator of color/shade. My stallion is very dark bay to the point of looking black, except for his cinnamon muzzle and flanks.

    New Puppy

Look who's 1 year old today! I got Pixie from the local rescue last October at about 3.5 months old; she came to them along with some of her siblings under special circumstances, so they had a birthday for her. We still have a way to go, but, she's come a long way from the nervous pup she was...

    2023 crafting for all...

I don't really care to have my picture taken, but this was at quilt guild Monday night. This is the other table runner I made; it was a kit the local quilt shop had on special in May (it has a red and white backing).

I bought what was left of the bolt of the little red flower, so the back is just that.

    2023 crafting for all...

I finished this little basic table runner last month. I have another but don't have a picture, yet, so will add it when I get the picture.

    Age? *teeth photos part 2

I'm not great at aging by teeth, but judging by the length of tooth, I'd say older than teens. They are so dark, it's really hard to see if Galvaney's Groove is present, so hard to use that as a possible marker. Can you get a picture of the biting surface (of incisors), the shape of the teeth...

    Earliest you have gelded?

Horses are supposed to be dropped at birth, then many hold them up high for their first year or so (not back through the ring, just not dropped fully into the scrotum.

    Earliest you have gelded?

Horses aren't fertile until at least 9 months old, so normal 4-6 months of age for weaning should be just fine, even if not gelded early. Definitely separate the cheeky ones from mares by 9 months of age.

    Earliest you have gelded?

Earliest I've done is yearling; but if they are down they can be gelded. Minis are notorious for being late droppers, so some can not be (easily) gelded until they are a bit older, three years is quite common.

    Billy

250# might be too light, but 275# might be good. It's amazing at what just 25# can do for a mini either way. [Jasper was taller at 37", but at 350# he was good, 325# he was emaciated and 375# he was obese. He had Cushings and was weighed a lot. I have pics of him too thin, about right and...
