    confused

Her coat pattern may be giving the impression, but her belly looks lopsided, which can be a sign of pregnancy.

Where there's a willy there's a way... I don't put anything past a determined stallion. More than one full-size mare has been bred by a 30" mini stallion without outside help; just a hill and/or a hole.

Am I Crazy To Have Such Young Horses at My Age?

Just keep doing what you are doing. Work on your confidence, and expand from where you are with your walks around the neighborhood, in time you'll be able to go on those longer hikes. I once read "go where you can, not where you can't". [So go with what's comfortable for you, and as you...

Am I Crazy To Have Such Young Horses at My Age?

They'll help keep you young. None of us know how much time we have, as accidents happen (horse and human), so just enjoy them. I'm a bit younger, but have minis from 2 years old to 30 years old; so will likely still have the youngest when I am your age, and if I have my way, may have a few...

    New Puppy

Yes, she can wear a collar, and I can make it snug enough to tie her if I need to. [Snug but not tight.]

    New Puppy

I got this pic of Pixie the other day. She needs to learn "NO" for a few things, but otherwise, she's doing very well.

    Feeding alfalfa

Fed in moderation mixed with grass forage, alfalfa shouldn't be a problem, and enteroliths shouldn't be likely to occur. I'm a bit surprised by the comment about phosphorus when alfalfa hay is typically 4-5x more calcium than phosphorus. For calorie, protein and balancing reasons, it's usually...

    Pink Skin

Zinc oxide cream is good for pink noses to help prevent sunburn. [The stuff lifeguards use on their nose.]

    New Puppy

A name will hit you. Pepper seems like an easy to call and for her to learn; Bonfire is cute, but might be a mouthful.

    New Puppy

Cute name. It's fitting, mini dog to go with mini horses. ;) Pixie is a Border Collie, so at 3.5 months, she's already like 16#, (I think that's what her clinic/rescue paperwork said for her spay).

    confused

Hate to say it, and it is hard to tell in pictures; but this looks like a pregnant belly. Shouldn't show this much in only about 3 months, if the stallion was only close since July; but if there was a stallion on the property longer, it could be possible there was a whoops and she is further...

    New Puppy

Most feel juvenile spaying is too young, so anything under like 9 months or so, but she came from a rescue, so they fix everything before adopting out. I'd discuss with your vet what is the best time for a pup the size/breed of yours (small ones I think they may wait a little later to ensure...

    New Puppy

Congratulations! Very cute. I just got a new puppy yesterday, she came from a semi-local rescue; a 3.5 month old Tri-Color Border Collie. [From a rescue so already spayed.] It is scary having a puppy again, it's been 6 years or so since we had a puppy here. It's a little easier with a...

    Time To Get Hay In

Our homegrown rounds are in the neighborhood of 1300#. I don't buy rounds, as we put up our own. I only buy small squares for the barn that is hard to access with a tractor and round bales. Last year, we didn't know if there would be enough homegrown hay, so I jumped at the chance for the...

What exactly is a foundation bred shetland?

I'm not sure I fully understand it, but IIRC it's bloodline, they have to be connected to foundation Shetland lines with no outside influence (Hackney was introduced to American Shetlands at one time, giving the Modern type). I'm sure there is more to it, but this is all I've retained.

    Time To Get Hay In

Drought greatly affects prices and quantity available. We've been in some state of drought for 6 years, last year was the worst, and this year not much better. Last year my hay more than doubled in cost from the previous year. [From about $150/ton (picked up) to $350/ton (The delivery...

    Vaccinations

It's better to space out shots for a mini; so if your vet typically recommends a 7-way shot, break it down into a 3-way and 4-way (or whatever combination) with a couple weeks in between the two shots (give one, wait two weeks, and give the other).

How did you decide to have a minihorse?

I somewhat lost interest in riding, but not horses, so figured I'd have horses you don't ride. No guilt for not riding.

    Exercising the young ones

I don't see anything in these pictures indicating dwarfism. Crooked legs, which I can't see from the angles in the pictures, can be just poor conformation. Minis often have pronounced foreheads as foals and grow into with maturity. Many vets have limited experience with miniatures...

    What color is he?

You are correct, none of those are correct. While not remotely close genetically; phenotypically, grey and white is probably closest. But, now you know silver dapple (silver black) is correct.
