    Possible pistachio ingestion

Frustrating for sure. I have to stress, though, that locking a stall door is a HUGE safety concern. Please do not do that, ever-- in case of a barn fire, that pretty much guarantees your horse will die even if there are people right there to evacuate horses from the barn.

    New Puppy

My rat terrier, Lucy, is 10 years old now. She was the cutest little puppy but I'd never have another rattie --most obnoxious, miserable dog ever.

    Time To Get Hay In

Last year the highest I paid was $100 per bale (1400 lbs) but most farmers were charging $150 per bale. This year we had rain so there is lots of hay--I paid $71 plus hauling ($20 per bale) for 1200 lb bales. That's 6 cents per pound or 7.6 cents when you add in the hauling.

What exactly is a foundation bred shetland?

To be Foundation sealed a pony has to have 4 generations of A papered ponies. If there is a B papered pony in the first 4 generations then the pony cannot be sealed.

    What color is he?

In actual fact, the eye anomalies are not a real problem in American Shetlands--and likewise not in Minuatures. Long time Shetland breeders will confirm that they have not seen a problem with MCOA in ASPC ponies. Silver, even homozygous silver, has been very common in ASPC ponies, yet breeders...

    What color is he?

He is a silver dapple pinto (silver black pinto if you prefer).

    Comparison of Pedigree

Absolutely I would choose Hawk. I have a son of Ozark Mtn's Action Hunter (paternal brother to Treasure Hunter--both are sired by Gold Mines Bounty Hunter) and he is an amazing pony. You cannot go wrong with that breeding.

If I missed the answer to this I apologize--what size is your dry lot?

    Back leg joint sticking

Make sure that his feet get trimmed regularly, and that they are trimmed st the correct angle. Long toes will make the stifle problem worse, shortening the toe a bit to make breakover a little easier/quicker will help prevent the problem.

    Pasture intake per hour

This year mine have been going out for 1 hour or a bit more (belly deep grass) once a day ( twice a day on weekend) and then otherwise they are in a sparse pasture with unlimited access to round hay bales (mostly grass hay). While they may be relatively full after an hour of grazing, I do note...

    Skin condition - extremely concerned

I would suggest having a skin punch biopsy done. That way your vet can test for other things. There is a condition called horse pemphigus foliaceus--an autoimmune disease that makes the horse's immune system attack its own skin. 5 years is a long time to go without treatment so probably it is...

What do you think makes a show great?

What makes a good show IMO: 1. The people running the show. Do they keep things on track so the show runs smoothly and on time? 2. Does the show have a good class list? Is the schedule good--again, so the show runs efficiently, or is the schedule a muddled up mess that causes delays with...

    Feeding/Diet Regimen & Hay types

Hay--free choice. I like grass hay, preferably brome, but currently am feeding a mixed meadow hay. I like some alfalfa for youngsters (weanings/yearlings) and pregnant/nursing mares. Oats is what mine get. I feed pellets only when I have a horse that needs a little something extra to put on a...

Can metal shafts replace wooden ones? Where is the best place to purchase?

Your best bet is to find a local welder who can make what you want. That way he can see the cart and make the shafts to fit. One difference--metal shafts will likely need reinforcement underneath.

    Can I shorten wooden shafts?

If the shafts fit, other than being too long, then it should be okay to cut some off the back, drill new holes and put them back on. However--first make sure the rest of the cart is not too big. If it is, then you will not be able to balance the cart.

    Trailering Advice

When I was using a 2 horse trailer with chest bars I did not want a mini getting under the bar because the front area had only a metal floor, no wood and I didn't know how sturdy that was. I got 2 small, sturdy pallets and tied those under the chest bars. They were very secure and no horse got...

Oh wow, I was wondering where they came from. I hadn't heard of any surrenders in a few months.
