Honestly, minis do not need lights to cycle all year round. We had mares that would cycle right through winter (no lights) --and had a couple winter foalings to prove it.

It works--I have a Koenders sled that is about that same size and can use a mini to pull it. A straw bale fits in it to sit on. I haven't hitched any one up in years--too cold, too much snow. I've considered adding shafts but for me it's not worth the cost.
