    Towing Capacity

Years back when the Smart Cart came out and was the big thing in the world of Mini driving, quite a number of people said a Smart Cart was too heavy for their 32 and 33 inch horses to pull. I think the Smart Cart was 105 pounds but I don't remember if that was the original one or the slightly...

    Ears

I never clean out the hair inside the ears--I just tidy up the edges as described above. However--I've not heard of anyone in North America getting penalized for shaving the inside of the ears. For the AMHA and AMHR shows the majority of people do clip the insides if the ears--they consider it...

    How's the Weather ?

I'm here! I have missed 2 days of work. Yesterday they closed pretty much all highways in southern Manitoba, even the low road I take into town (it's been over 20 years since that one has been closed!). It's 3:30 pm of day 2 of the storm and highways are still closed--it may be tomorrow before...

    How's the Weather ?

If I had a generator I would be in great shape. As it is, I stocked up on some food we can eat cold, propane for the camp stove, batteries; the horses have extra water tanks, we have water for drinking and water for flushing. I will keep all our devices charged up. I expect to miss work Wed...

    How's the Weather ?

I wish we cod redirect our approaching snowstorm (Colorado low) back to dump on the fires in Colorado and wherever else they are burning. This is the statement posted on our municipal website:

    Garlic for bug protection?

We used it for the summer, so that should have been long enough.

    Garlic for bug protection?

I tried Springtime garlic one summer, quite a few years ago, and did not notice any effect at all. The horses who got it had just as many flies as those who didn't. So, I have not bought it since.

    Training for connection and respect

I use treats. If a horse cannot be caught with treats, then I run him in the barn and corner him, then get the halter on and give a treat. I had a couple mishandled ones that could not be caught any other way. One did eventually let me catch him in a corner of his corral, but it wasn't 100%...

    Gardening

My garden containers are u Der 3 feet if snow now and likely will be for another month. I'll buy tomatoes (bedding plants) in late April and will put in potatoes and cucumber seeds when I can --don't think I will plant anything else this year. I've taken a full time term job starting tomorrow...

    How's the Weather ?

Today I hear there is flooding in Australia? I hope all our friends here from down under are okay?

    How's the Weather ?

Silver City --we rarely get chinooks any more. Years.back--in the 80s and early 90s we would get them maybe 3 or 4 times a winter and they would give us a couple days of milder weather. We haven't had a chinook in a few years now--guess they blow out before they get this far? This winter we...

    How's the Weather ?

Riding at -50--no thanks! Even when I was a kid I never had any interest in riding when it was -30 or colder. Riding is foe spring, summer and fall. Winter--we just exist!!

    How's the Weather ?

Here is a photo of the ice skater. The TransCanada west of Brandon opened late this morning; I'm told it was open for a whole 7 minutes before there was an accident that stopped traffic --then they closed it down again.

    How's the Weather ?

We were -37C again this morning. I wish I could share a video here--it's on Facebook. It shows a girl skating on a highway near here--that is how icy our highways all are. She is skating just as she would in an ice rink. We had a couple hours of rain Saturday evening, then it turned to wet...

    Winter heat cycles

Honestly, minis do not need lights to cycle all year round. We had mares that would cycle right through winter (no lights) --and had a couple winter foalings to prove it.

Miscarriage at 8 months, headed to vet

I am sorry for the loss. That is so disappointing. Unfortunately these things do happen and often we never know why. How is your mare doing? What did the vet have to say? Was the cord twisted? A twisted umbilical cord is one fairly common reason for an abortion. Possibly infection? EHV...

    Crazy shedding in winter

If he is indoors where the lights are on--during hours that are normally dark--that will do it. Our horses did this one wi ter when they were in the barn at night--we would put them in and then have the lights on while doing all the chores--it was likely adding 3 hours of light to each day...

    Sleds

It works--I have a Koenders sled that is about that same size and can use a mini to pull it. A straw bale fits in it to sit on. I haven't hitched any one up in years--too cold, too much snow. I've considered adding shafts but for me it's not worth the cost.

    How's the Weather ?

We had 0*C today but of course it was windy (Chinook blew in from Alberta) so the snow was blowing. Roads are ice covered, and I have to go to town in the morning. 😞 Nice day though, wish the warm weather would stay!
