    How's the Weather ?

I wear muck boots, sweatpants over a thin pair of cotton long underwear, Tshirt and sweatshirt with a necessary and wool tuque. If it is colder than -30 or if it's colder than -20C with a strong wind then I also wear a fleece jacket. I have fleece lined leather mitts for when I have to chop...

    Blanketing Minis ❄️

If they are cold they will let you know. We rarely blanket ours--and we're in Canada (Manitoba) where -40 temps and -53 windchill are common enough in winter. I had 1 mini mare that would get cold and start shaking if it was cold and windy. So, she would get a blanket until the cold spell...

    Turnaround Time for Papers?

I haven't sent anything in awhile but past experience tells me that paperwork sent in December is usually some of the slowest. It is a very busy month for office staff as so many people wait until last minute to get the year's paperwork sent in. Factor in the holiday office closures and it...

How many of you mini horse owners also have riding horses?

We had Morgans for 46 years, then got into Minis in 2001. Our last Morgan was here until 2012--that one was a mare and she absolutely hated the Minis. She would have killed them if she could have got to them. She was, however, best buddies with one of the American Shetlands--a very small...

    Converting cart to sleigh

I know people do use them on unpacked snow, but I honestly do not know how hard the horse has to work at it. One thing--be sure to chain the front of the runners to the body of the cart. If you don't, the runners are likely to hit a rough patch of ground and twist around.

    Beginner's Questions

Check the tow capacity of your vehicle before you buy a trailer. I drive a Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk which is rated for towing 4500 lbs. You should never tow a trader which is right up to capacity; I have a 14 ft stock trailer (5 ft wide, 6'6" high) and can haul that with 2 or 3 ponies inside...

    How's the Weather ?

On the plus side....we currently have no mosquitoes. Yes, I have a pretty decent trail from house to pasture so hauling warm water out 2x a day isn't too hard. Now the problem is my silly ponies likes to mess around instead of drink. They crowd in, fight over then water, stand there and pull...

    How's the Weather ?

    How's the Weather ?

We actually did get snow after 11 last night, and overnight/this morning. We got about 8 inches on the level so that's wonderful--though now I need to get trails made through the snow so hauling out water is easier...it is now -27 and wine at least -30 overnight.

    How's the Weather ?

We have a snowfall warning for tonight/tomorrow...hoping for a few inches of snow! Then it's going to turn COLD.

    How's the Weather ?

Marsha I didn't know that they were closing the road at night to allow transport trucks through. Here in Manitoba we haven't seen much problem from the supply chain interruption--the only thing I have been unable to get are the Christmas oranges, which are one of the things stuck in BC. We have...

    Poison ivy

If you are getting hives from advice you will probably want to avoid the other NSAIDS as well--aleve and Voltaren for example. I had a rash one time from Aleve. Took it again another time because it worked so well (and a rash isn't so bad, really)...that time I ended up in the doctor's office...

New horse owners / medical plans

$1300 a year is what your insurance is adding up to? That's a lot too. See, I didn't spend $1300 on vet calls this year. Nor last year, even for 17 horses. I gelded one last year, that's $200. Deworming--which I do myself. Vaccines--which I do myself. Dental work as needed--and that does...

New horse owners / medical plans

$40 per month is affordable if you have 1 or 2. I currently have 17 so that would be $680 per month. Not happening--an occasional vet bill is far cheaper. Back in the day when we had around 40 horses, it would have been totally unrealistic. I could buy insurance for a couple but guaranteed...

    Poison ivy

Do you have a hot tub? Just asking because I once knew someone who was convinced he had poison ivy he'd encountered on a golf course. It was a horrible case of poison ivy, nothing worked and it just kept spreading. After a very long period of time his doctor figured out that it was not poison...

    Best waterproof boots?

For the coldest winter weather I have Muck boots; otherwise I wear the Kamik or Baffin boots (rubber with wool felt liners). I always go barefoot in my boots and both these boots keep my feet warm. In summer I just use whatever cheap boot I can pick up in Walmart. I used to buy better...

    How's the Weather ?

Do we have anyone from British Columbia here? Specifically the Chilliwack area that's getting drowned put from the pineapple express? What terrible conditions they have out there with rain causing flooding and mudslides/rockslides.

    How's the Weather ?

I'm ecstatic. We got snow yesterday/last night. A lot of snow, maybe 10 or 15 cm? Areas northeast of here got a lot more. Roads were all closed overnight, lots of semis in the ditch, some highways blocked due to jackknifed rigs. We never lost power, so that's a plus, and its not cold (-8C...
