Can you explain AMHR national area shows to me?

The National Area shows do not require qualification ("Regionals" is not an AMHR term--that is AMHA) though the Area shows do count as qualifiers for Nationals. You can use local shows to qualify for Nationals--there is no requirement for showing at an Area show before entering Nationals.

    Taking Conchos Off Cable Halter

I sold the conchos I had with this kind of clip--they won't fall off, but they do slide down on the fine cable halters, or some of them do. I much prefer the barrette backs, even if they can easily fall off if you don't check them frequently.

    Taking Conchos Off Cable Halter

Yes, just bend the 2 ends so they go straight down, then grab the middle of the pin and pull it up--with the ends straightened it will just slide right out.

Can you explain AMHR national area shows to me?

National Area shows. Yes, 1 judge, triple points. I believe that the Shetland classes pay out futurity money (AMHR classes do not) at the area shows. Area shows offer all (nearly) the classes for every division, so that's a plus. As I recall the rule book gives a pretty good description of...

    Round Pen / Cats

I agree with Kelly--the cats do not cause me any problwm, but I draw the line at the dogs pooping anywhere around the horses and hay. My dogs know better than to chase cats--mine or anyone else's, but like Kelly's they do a good job of cleaning out any cat poop left out.

    What blankets do you like?

I use Kensingtons. They are waterproof, warm, fit great and hold up well.

Talk to me about 4-wheeled vehicles

You need to get a 2 wheel cart that has suspension for the entire cart. Many carts have springs under the seat. This helps the driver, but the horse still gets all the bumps from the cart itself. The smart cart, for example, had air bag suspension for the entire cart--the horse gets very...

Coloring your horse for the show ring

I thought it is against the rules to dye the horse's body--but I suppose people do it anyway. Most I know dye only the mane/tail; some do legs as well.

    Grazing un-fenced pasture

No, please do not use chain to tie out! Yikes. Yes, I have known a horse who was put out on a chain, got it wrapped around a leg....what a horrible mess she made of that leg! Wish I had photos but I don't--it was a friend's mare, quite a few years ago.

    One Handed - Hoof Nippers

Key words there --"cuts down on farrier visits"....that is different than "eliminates farrier visits".

    How's the Weather ?

Here in MB it's been a cool spring, with lots of wind. Unfortunately it is also very dry--probably the driest spring any of us have seen. We had almost no snow all winter ter, and we were dry last fall going into winter. We have extreme fire risk -- fire bans in most municipalities, no back...

    Conformation critique

Stock type or not, you will want to condition her and get her muscled up rather than have her fat. Note that at the show you will want to refer to the open halter horses as refined, not skinny. People won't appreciate having their show horses called skinny! :)

Can you fix a really bad clip job?

With the hair leaves the hair longer, so any spots that get cut shorter or longer than the average are glaringly obvious. Shaving against the hair leaves hair shorter, so while you will still see some "oops" spots, they are less obvious overall. If you clip a week to 10 days before the show...

Can you fix a really bad clip job?

Clipping with the hair takes a lot of practice to make it look smooth. Show clips are generally done against the hair and truthfully are easier to do. You can still have it come out looking amateurish on first try, but it still won't look as bad as a rough "with the hair" clip job. I use Wahl...

Are you looking at AMHA or AMHR shows? Or just 4H and/or open/fun shows?

    One Handed - Hoof Nippers

Yes, the GE nippers are very sharp, and cut easily.

    One Handed - Hoof Nippers

I am pretty sure that the Barracudas were discontinued years ago. I just bought a new set of 15" GE nippers--they cut easily, and since I am down so many horses now I expect this new set will last me quite a few years. Previously I was trimming 40-some horses regularly, and a set of nippers...

    Colour and testing question

Yes, he looks buckskin, not bay!

    Colour and testing question

Your foal could be bay if the palomino mom carries at least 1 dominant agouti gene. Sire would be E_aaCrcr. Then if the dam is eeA_Crcr, foal got E and a from dad and e and A from mom, and there is your bay.

    Crimped hay

One thing about crimped alfalfa--if there are blister beetles in the field, the crimping will kill them and leave them in the hay. If the hay is cut without crimping, the beetles will generally leave the hay before it is baled. If the hay comes from an area with blister beetles, check it...
