How much weight can Shetlands pull, round bales?

Well, I have American Shetlands 40 to 44 inches tall. I wouldn't expect to move a round bales with fewer than 4 ponies, and honestly am not about to try even with that. When I have to move a bale myself (usually my neighbor does it with his tractor) I hook a vehicle to the bale. I used to use...

Where do you go for advice on showing?

I am not sure just what you have looked.at on the AMHR site, but you should find current information there. They post a list of shows for the current year, and each one should have a contact email or phone number showing. The Area shows (which is what you are calling Zone Nationals I think)...

    Thyrol-L

I know some vets will prescribe thyrol-L for fat horses, but it is not something I would choose to use for that purpose. Thyrol-L is a thyroid medication used to treat an underactive thyroid. Most horses do not have hypothyroidism--if a horse tests low, it is pretty much always due to some...

    Bute Toxicity vs Botulism

I am sorry to say, 1 gram of Bute 2 times a day is a serious overdose for a mini. Yes, your horse almost certainly died of Bute toxicity. Botulism causes paralysis--much different than the horse simply not eating. I'm so sorry!

    Foal blanket, any quick ideas?

For future use--in an emergency, take a blanket (wool is best) and cut it to fit. Hand sew the chest closed and use a strip of fleece as a surcingle--wrap it right around baby and use duct tape to secure it. I did that for a winter baby and it worked great. We had a Hudson Bay wool blanket on...

    Feeding grain....

I prefer to grain twice a day; mine get a pound of oats per feed, morning and night, and hay is free choice. They also get salt blocks and a made-for-horses mineral block.

How do I register a mini? Help!

To register ASPC the pony must have both parents registered ASPC. An ASPC pony can be AMHR registered if it is small enough, but an AMHR horse that goes over 38" cannot get ASPC papers based on size. AMHR does not allow hardshippjng of "grade" horses--they need ASPC, AMHA or Falabella...

    Keeping pony safe from Coyotes

We have never had coyotes bother our horses. When we first got minis and had only a few young ones, we put them in the barn at night because they were so small (weanlings) and we did have coyotes coming in. Once the horses were mature we left them out 24/7 without worry. Our ponies--since...

    Pedigree Research

Your best bet, for starters, would be to send your application in; when you get your papers, you will have the pedigree on the papers. That is a good beginning.

    Thanksgiving Plans????

Here in Manitoba you cannot have a gathering of more than 5 people--indoors or outdoors--so we couldn't even hold a funeral for the turkey. Our cases are so high now, we went code red and locked down all but essential services again on Nov. 12. People were still going to the big stores and...

    Pedigree Research

In AMHR you can change the name if 1) the horse has not been shown 2) the horse has no registered offspring 3) the breeder provides a signed letter consenting to the name change 4) you pay $100 fee.

    Pedigree Research

Someone with studbook access will be able to look up the pedigrees for you. Is his paperwork for AMHR, or AMHA? I let my studbook access lapse a few months ago so cannot help with this.

Too Rug Or Not To Rug

Most of ours do not need blanketing, even when temperatures drop to -35F and there is a wind blowing. They are outside with run in sheds if they want to use them, but a lot of the time they just hang out around the round bales. I did have 2 ponies that needed their blankets any time the...

REBEL - VSE PAIR CART FREY

I have a Frey cart but would have no interest in driving a pair on it or any 2 wheel cart. It is not safe.

    Gestation period

I start watching them after 295 days. I have had them foal at 297, 305, 310 up to 330. I do not have many that went as long as 330, and I figure "due date" at 320.

    Frey Cart question

When we ordered ours there were no delays at all. We had the cart in less than a month (actually I think it was only 2 weeks or justvunder) from when we ordered. It was very quick.

    Australia's wildfires

Terrible fires, and they have been burning so long already, with no end in sight. I just can't imagine living there and having animals to worry about. Even before the fires got so bad, the drought was killing so much livestock.
