Help! First-time pregnant horse owner going crazy

Unfortunately it’s not safe to say that. Some don’t let down milk until AT foaling or even after. That udder is definitely building. The tears should point down/out instead of in but it can change fast. With how it’s filling in around her legs, she is definitely headed in the right direction.

Help! First-time pregnant horse owner going crazy

It is edema. Not totally unusual. Getting them moving usually helps. Udder is getting there. In theory it will fill more but I would definitely be watching her.

    HPR 2023 Foals!

For sure! I give banamine usually before the mare even stands up lol. This was a perfect case of why I watch them so closely and test even though many say there is no need. She went from not ready, to foaling in 18 hrs. It was a massive foal AND a red bag. No way she would have pushed him out in...

    HPR 2023 Foals!

Well Gypsy is 309 days. Not much in the udder department. But she’s starting to get soft over the rump. I decided just to see if she had milk and she does, and it’s very easy to get, it’s sticky, and ph is not sky high. So she may not go as long as I originally thought. She’s under cam, but not...

That udder is getting more serious. Should fill more but they don’t always follow the rules. Are you testing milk ph?

    HPR 2023 Foals!

Thanks everyone! Both mommas and both babies are doing great. Gypsy is next up at 304 days today. She is not rushing too much right now, but as a maiden we are watching her a bit closer than normal.

Want to take a guess? Is she pregnant?

The shaking of the head and neck around is a myth. Belly biting depends on the mare. Some do it a lot normally, and some never do. When they are getting close, the belly biting is different. Almost like snapping at their sides due to discomfort, not just scratching an itch.

Help! First-time pregnant horse owner going crazy

Mare stare is no longer active. There is a group called Marewatchers on Facebook that kinda replaced it. She’s definitely starting an udder but should have a ways to go. It’s very normal for it to be fuller in the morning than in the evening. Take a look at my thread to see some foaling udders.

Sorry, autocorrect LOL, supposed to be end stages. They all progress differently, so it requires close monitoring. I try to check morning and evening at the minimum.

    HPR 2023 Foals!

Forgot to update last night, coco went from testing 8.1 and a brix of 21 at 11:45 am yesterday morning, to testing <6.3 and brix of 35+ at 7 pm last night. She foaled at 8:30 this morning. Huge bay colt with a small star. It was a red bag delivery but thankfully we got him out in time and he is...

Okay so ultrasounds are very hit or miss for gauging gestation. she is definitely starting an udder so you are finally in the end stages (in theory lol).

    HPR 2023 Foals!

Thank you! Yes she’s hopefully going to be in halter. She’s pretty fearless so I’d love to get her involved in obstacle too. I’m also planning on doing liberty classes with her!

    HPR 2023 Foals!

Thank you! That’s my tiny two year old filly, HPR Dices Silver Belle. She’s under 28” and on my showstring. She’s mad that she’s no longer the tiny cute one LOL. She’s also by my stallion.

    HPR 2023 Foals!

Well I finally settled on a name, HPR Dices Legend Of Olympus AKA Legend. This guy is absolutely bursting with personality. He is ready for a playmate lol! Unfortunately Cocoa is content to take her sweet time, maybe she sees this wild child and thinks better of releasing her hostage.

    HPR 2023 Foals!

And update on the next mares up. Cocoa has a pretty impressive udder but still testing high. Hopefully the little dude will have another playmate before long! She is now 313 days. Gypsy has also started a small udder at 288 days.
