    HPR 2023 Foals!

Yes we find that brix rises before ph drops. I use it when ph is high to help predict the drop. Then I usually use it just for free sting colostrum quality after she foals to determine if I need to supplement.

    HPR 2023 Foals!

Izzy is down to 6.6. Brix is up to well over 30. I use a refractometer to measure colostrum quality which gives me the brix.

    HPR 2023 Foals!

Izzy is testing 7.2 this morning and has a brix of 30. Udder has shrunk some so it’ll be an interesting couple of days!

    HPR 2023 Foals!

Tested ph tonight…Izzy is testing 7.8 and cocoa 8.1. So it seems Izzy is starting to drop ph levels.

    HPR 2023 Foals!

Honestly I’m not sure what the actual reason is but I do believe size has a part in it. These are pics this morning, but they’ve made more progress throughout the day.

    HPR 2023 Foals!

300 days is considered the safe date for minis. Average is 320-330 days of gestation. So both are within the safe date. I’d like for them to make 310-315 anyway. But many foal under 310 (some even under 300) without a problem. Izzy is 306 and Cocoa is 302.

    HPR 2023 Foals!

Both made good progress today. Izzy is looking about like she did a week prior to foaling previously. Of course she could easily go longer. But I am definitely watching her closer now. And cocoa has an even larger udder so…..👀

    HPR 2023 Foals!

Izzy and Cocoa have both started small udders now. Izzy is 302 days and Cocoa at 298. My camera link is now live for anyone that wants to watch. I think we have a couple of weeks yet but you never know! High Plains Miniature Horses Streaming By MareWatchers

    First time owner

It is very hard to tell from pictures alone if a mare is in foal. From these pics I would think not in foal but maidens can hide it well. Do you have a vet that can US her? With her age and as a maiden I would encourage you to make sure you are there when she foals if she is in foal to make sure...

    HPR 2023 Foals!

Wide load alert 😂 Izzy and cocoa are both making small amounts of progress…nothing significant yet.

    HPR 2023 Foals!

Everyone is progressing great. Izzy and cocoa are starting to make tiny changes as they get closer to 300 days. All four are over pregnancy at this point lol. Hoping to have our camera system up and on Marewatchers within the next 2 weeks. Izzy - 281 days Cocoa - 277 days Gypsy - 252 days...

    Rescue or breed?

In my opinion there is nothing wrong with doing either in certain circumstances. Eventually all horses need homes or they end up in kill pens/dying. But to say people should not be breeding horses (no one here has said that just saying in general), is also not right. In any breeding program...

Talk to me about placentitis please

I highly recommend taking pics. It gives you a more subjective way to monitor for change. So she is about 260 days? I would definitely be watching closely if that is the case. That is exactly about when my mare started to make progressive changes. She foaled at 276ish days and the foal was, of...

Talk to me about placentitis please

How far along is she? Some mares are prone to placentitis depending on their conformation back there. I don’t typically see difference in the frequency between minis and full sized although that would be an interesting study. I’ve only had one with placentitis, and the ONLY symptom was early and...

    Our new pregnent mini

Congratulations! What a pretty BIG colt!

    Our new pregnent mini

It’s not unusual for the spine to be more obvious as they get close because all the muscle is relaxing in preparation for foaling. Mine often get bony looking but it resolves shortly after foaling. You can get a damp rag and clean between her teats if you want. Should clean up pretty nice. How...

    HPR 2023 Foals!

It’s funny for sure! Rythem is hiding her belly so well, not so with the other three!

    Our new pregnent mini

Yes that udder is much better! Are you checking at night and morning? Or one or the other? You will probably notice her udder is larger in the morning and shrinks h throughout the day. Can’t wait to see what she has for you!
