    2022 Show season

I did not get to show as much as I hoped/planned to. Actually only made it to 1 show with only 1 horse because of grad school. We did okay, not as well as I would have liked but did not get to prepare as much as I would have liked either. I have 4 potential horses for my show string next year. I...

    Mini horse abortion

it usually takes time for that weight to come off. It’s extremely unusual, in fact I don’t know if it’s possible, for a mare to abort one twin only. Because the cervix has to open and that will expose them both, typically 100% fatal for the developing foal.

    AMHA Live Feed

For some reason it won’t allow me to post a link without embedding the video. I added the link. However you will have to remove the space in the https. I added a space between h and t to keep it from converting.

    Exercising the young ones

Mini foals are born with very rounded forehead. Totally normal. They grow out of it. A more rounded forehead is actually desirable to some breeders because it usually means the horse will have a more dishy Arabian like head. I like to use my stallion as an example of the rounded forehead as a...

    Exercising the young ones

I agree, she does not have traditional signs of dwarfism. This is a typical dwarf. Sadly many vets are not very experienced/knowledgeable about breeding minis and mini genetics.

    Exercising the young ones

I agree, she is not a dwarf. Which is great news, because if she was it would be unlikely she’d ever be sound enough to be rideable. The dishy head is quite normal and actually considered desirable to many. Her legs are nice and straight whereas a dwarfs would be crooked generally. I can’t...

    What color is he?

The mare is a silver dapple pinto and the stallion is a red pinto. Both appear to have the tobiano pattern but I’d test to be sure. Particularly if you breed them. Don’t want to change a LWO foal.

    What color is he?

Yup 100% silver dapple pinto (tobiano pattern). Looks like he has some lacing on his back as well. A lot of people call them chocolate palominos which is not a genetics term. Unfortunately a lot of vets are not well versed in horse color genetics).

Miniature mares unable to get into foal

It could be something they are eating. I’m not sure where you are so can’t tell you what plants. But a lot of counties have departments that can help make sure there are no bad plants. So a lot of people have had issues with mares aborting or not taking from yearly vaccines. Especially west Nile...

Miniature mares unable to get into foal

Yes I would have the mares and stallions both checked if it’s been that long with no foals. Do you do yearly vaccinations? Since it’s all four that are not taking I’d assume it’s something in common. If none of those are the issue, I’d even check to ensure none carry dwarfism. There is one gene...

Miniature mares unable to get into foal

How are the mares weights? If they are overweight they can have a hard time getting in foal. Next thing I would look at is having them get a culture down and make sure there’s nothing there that’s preventing them catching. Might even look at getting their metabolism checked.

    I’m seeing black Sabino.

    Udder development

320 days is a common average that people use. They can go earlier or much later. Not unusual for them to hit 350-360+ days.

    Back leg joint sticking

I agree. Sounds very muck like locking stifles which is pretty common in minis. Cayuse described some great exercises which should definitely help. In addition, if he ever seems stuck and you can’t get them to unlock, backing will often help. Most locking stifles can be managed with a good...

Who all is expecting foals in 2023?

Well Izzy and Rhythem have both been checked in foal as well as two outside mares. I am pretty confident about Belle as well. Come next spring I should (Lord willing) have 5 bouncing babies!
