    Wheee! Driving hours 2023

I learned to ride as a kid at a farm that bred Haflingers. I just love them. The older I get the less interested I am in riding tall horses, and the ones we rode as kids were quite fun to ride - used to jump them all around the hunt field there.

    Back on Track?

Falcor is absolutely adorable. Very brave with that rocking horse!

    Back on Track?

Here's a pair of hock boots on my big girl... they don't look special but are supposed to have some ceramic in the fibers that reflects heat back and increases circulation. They definitely warm up her joints!

    Back on Track?

I'm going to measure his little legs tomorrow and see if it could work. They look pretty adjustable so maybe it could work. I like the idea of a saddle pad in a sheet.

    Back on Track?

Hi all, Our little Marty is more visibly stiff in his hind end since the ground has frozen - he's always had some crackly sounds in the back. I've had good luck with Back on Track products for arthritis in our big horses, and wondering if anyone has used them on their minis? I'm eyeing the dog...

    Vitamins/supplements quantity for little ones

I think so, too. Our little guy is 250 lb so we do half the pony dose. I eyeball it with my assortment of scoops for things like a multivitamin or omega 3's but if I ever give something like bute (I do this very rarely for him) I weigh it out on a kitchen scale.

    Winter feeding? Northern Midwest Winters?

Chandab thanks for the recommendations! We've been trying the Safe Starch and its going pretty well - mixing a handful in with his mash slows him down quite a bit, and I've been giving him a feed scoop's worth to munch on overnight. I love that it's vitamin fortified too, i had been giving him a...

    Intro to new mini?

I can only imagine! Sometimes I lose sight of little Marty in the tall grass out back and even that gives me palpitations.

    Intro to new mini?

Agreed - these guys don't really do much running and playing, mostly nibbling grass in the same general vicinity. Our Oz is a half-Arab also, and just the best. We adopted him for my daughter when he was 24 and now he is 30 and I hope we have 10 more good years with him. I joke I'll still be...

    Intro to new mini?

I will be one to say we do have our pretty robust, 34"/250 lb mini Marty in with a 14ish hand gelding, Oz. As a back story, we have 2 other mares, Sara - a warmblood who kicked and killed a big horse in turnout many years ago before we owned her - and Josie - a small draft who was born on a...

    Marty's Journey

Marty is getting so brave on his walks - we are going a little farther every time we go out and his feet are getting better even without his shoes. A person driving by stopped today and said - "I thought for a minute that was the biggest dog I've ever seen!" 😂 He's just the best boy!

    Winter feeding? Northern Midwest Winters?

We do! I am going to ask the vet when they come out for his next float. If she thinks it's ok to try then we'll start with that. I've also seen people chop their own hay with a mulcher which may be another option.

    Winter feeding? Northern Midwest Winters?

40! I hope our guys live that long. Marty has already choked once at rescue, and when he has gotten near some hay on the ground and munched on it I've seen him drop big quids of food out of his mouth, so I do worry about his safety. I'm looking into grain slow feeders to at least slow him down a...

    Winter feeding? Northern Midwest Winters?

I wonder if anyone here has experience managing a horse who can no longer eat hay in the winter? Little Marty has choked and has no real teeth left. He eats soaked beet pulp, timothy cubes, and senior feed 3 times a day. Right now he nibbles on the little grass that grows on our land, but I'm...

    Marty's Journey

The CLBs are great - otherwise his little feet are so sensitive that even stepping on an acorn on the road would make him limp. They're hardening up slowly. We're saving the Build A Bear shoes for special occasions ;)

    Marty's Journey

Well I'm trying to make the walks happen... I want him to be my walking partner and jokingly call him my Golden Retriever. I think he is not totally convinced but we're working on it.

    Marty's Journey

Marty's feet are coming along nicely so I am trying to get him out walking a little more. We went about 1/4 mile down the road and back today... everyone who passes (mostly people driving to and from the large horse farm at the end of the road) smiles at him. He is a little reluctant with...

Horse For Sale Free to 4-H home, Two mini's available

Diana, it is so wonderful you do this. When I was a teen an older couple in our area had several horses in the backyard that they had bred and would never sell, but that weren't being used. They let my friend and I ride and show them in 4H and local shows in exchange for my friend cleaning...
