    Marty's Journey

Marty had a good report from the farrier this past weekend, who said his "elf feet" were hardening up nicely and wasn't too worried about the thrush. I've been hesitant to take him for walks on the road because his little feet still seem very tender at times, but after that we decided to go out...

    Hello Mini Lovers!

Lovely! We just adopted our first mini in May, and I am pretty much obsessed with him! Have to remind myself to pay equal attention to the big horses :)

    liver help, please!

What a nightmare. You probably have seen this with all the research you are doing, but I was just reading this. It sounds like a different thing than your minis since this is in racehorses in training but I wonder if these supplements (CoQ10, selenium, omega-3) are worth a try. I hope you find...

    Marty's Journey

Maybe getting a little too round, haha! Someone suggested the SmartPak Smart Itch Ease supplement and I think it has made a world of difference for his skin and coat.

    Marty's Journey

Thank you! It pains me now to see his old photos. He had undiagnosed cushings, lice, and starvation from his terrible teeth. I hope he has many happy years ahead!

    Marty's Journey

Hi everyone, I thought I would start a thread to follow the progress of our rescue mini Marty... mostly because everyone I know in real life is probably sick of hearing about him 😂 He came to us in late May after being in rescue since December and he's such a character. We are still working on...

    Hi from So. Cal.

It may also be worth weighing the hay, if you can. Especially if the hay is coming from a different source than the old owner was using it may vary.

    EquiVizor Review

Yes, we have had great luck with the kensington with extended nose for our big horse who has a bald nose from an old scar. They hold up great and keep the sun off.

Cushings disease and wonky hair growth

I had a similar problem with Marty & his pergolide - he likes to knock his grain onto the ground to eat it so we weren't sure he was getting the meds. I made a batch of this soft dough to wrap around the med. For one mini and a half tab of pergolide this recipe would last forever. I didn't even...

Warm foot in our new guy

We're not soaking anymore, but when I was talking to her on a Friday and she couldn't come until Monday - and I hadn't realized how deep the thrush was - she suggested soaking in an ice bath with Betadine to hopefully help with laminitis and/or thrush. Now we are just filling all his little...

Warm foot in our new guy

We've done the diaper when our draft had an abscess, was debating where to find diapers small enough for this hoof! Marty has a similar thing with his hoof where the sole is somehow growing in a way that it keeps his toes from sitting flush with the ground. The vet said it was from the white...

Warm foot in our new guy

Huh. That's an interesting idea. I can imagine him totally losing his mind with a wet bag taped to his feet but could also imagine our other horses tolerating it. Vet came out and did xrays, it is definitely deep sulcus thrush - no evidence of laminitis thank goodness. I was so proud of him...

Warm foot in our new guy

Just want to thank you all again for your concern especially since I am such a newcomer here! Marty's foot is still cool and he was still jogging to turnout this morning. We're going to keep up with the Today until the farrier comes next week but I feel hopeful.

Warm foot in our new guy

This morning after filling all his hoof cracks with Today, packing with cotton balls, and wrapping overnight the hoof was not nearly as hot and he actually jogged alongside me on his way out to turnout! 🤞Hoping this is the cure.

Warm foot in our new guy

Yes our vet was the one who recommended it. I think thrush is the winning diagnosis here. When I was getting the med into the cracks with the little tip all of a sudden the tip went in deep - like deeper than it should have been able to - and he jumped straight up. Now, how to convince a 30 yo...

Warm foot in our new guy

Thanks Marsha, I don't see him laying down at all, and he got up and down a few times to roll today, so you're right I'm thinking it's not too terrible (fingers crossed). And he was a real pill about his feet the first week he was here so I'm also trying to get him practicing for the farrier...

Warm foot in our new guy

Thanks everyone! I appreciate your thoughts. Vet is coming out Monday unless he worsens over the weekend and we may do xrays especially to see if it will guide the farrier. She recommended dilute iodine soaks in cold water through the weekend. We've used the cow mastitis treatment "Today" for...

Warm foot in our new guy

Hi everyone, I have a concern with our new fellow Marty, and would love your thoughts (while we involve vet and farrier). When I was picking out his feet Wednesday evening I noticed the front left was warm, both touching the hoof and in his heel. He was moving around fine in turnout but sore...

Has Anyone Switched From Riding Horses to Minis?

I just joined the other day as we are about 10 days into mini horse ownership. We have 3 big horses, aged 22-30, and for various reasons (work, kid, etc) ride very little. We just adopted a mini to hopefully be a pasture friend for our 30 yo gelding, as the mares are too mean to share turnout 😣...

    Hello from Mass!

Thanks for the welcomes, everyone. We are so obsessed with little Marty. He has the strongest opinions of any horse I have ever met. At the moment we don't have a shelter in the area where he is turned out, so this weekend when it was rainy we left him in until the rain passed. He was kicking...
