    Competitive driving

I always encourage the girls because they are still pretty green. This is only the third event for the near lead mare, and the fifth for the off mare. They boys are pretty steady.

    Competitive driving

Leaders are mares and wheelers are stallions! Thank you!

    Competitive driving

I use vocals to help the keep the team on the same page, and so I don't have to use the reins to jerk the horses around. This way they stay happy and soft. I am super happy with my four, they really are Awesome!

Here is a short raw clip from two hazards without any music added. Yes, I am constantly talking to the team! https://youtu.be/lNxPh2BFw3Y

Here is what it's like to drive a four in hand through a cones course. https://youtu.be/aSOx3daFr5Q

Seedy toe - white line disease

I've used a product called White Lightning. You mix it 50/50 with vinegar. It creates a gas that permeates through the hoof cracks and crevices. I've had pretty good luck with it.

    Competitive driving

Hubby and I participated in a two day Arizona Driving Trial this past weekend. I drove my four in hand of Appaloosas while Hubby was my navigator. Each day was a separate event which consisted of a dressage test, a cones course and four sets of hazards. If you would like to see what it's like...

    To geld or not?

I drive a pair of stallions at the wheel position with different mares in front of them. They know their job and do it with just a little reminder now and again. I have one I gelded 4-5 years ago at 10-12 years old and he is okay driving or tied (even was as a stallion), however his private...

    Improving length of stride

Long trotting uphill has been an old-timers secret for getting good extension and for getting horses to work off their rears. Turn around then make them walk down in a controlled manner will also get them on their rear and using it to control the cart. I would definitely use breeching with this...

Best Kind of Wagon or Cart for Uneven Ground

For a single horse a two wheeled cart, with suspension. There is a cart builder in Canada that is building some really nicely sprung carts, with independent suspension. If you are doing a pair, a well sprung four wheeled vehicle is better then a two wheeler as the buggy carries the weight. With...

i need bearings for my wheels

Try your local Ace Hardware or True Value Hardware. Ours carries several types of wheel bearings. We've replace bearings on even some wood wheels! You can remove the old bearings to match for size.

    An Eight hitch

I've not weighed the reins at my hands yet, but plan on doing it next time I drive them. I am using the same rein technique that the big draft drivers use. Lead reins over the top finger down through hand, the other three in order with their tails up and out the top, over the thumb.

    An Eight hitch

Thank you! Yes, driving an eight keeps you thinking continually. You must think ahead of the turns at the corners, think of your reins, think of who needs to step it up or easy back. The swings for docking is even harder because everyone must move at a different pace on the swing. The leaders...

    An Eight hitch

Another successful drive under our harness yesterday! Drove about forty minutes total. We practiced transitions, backing, docking and threading a few cones. So much fun! I will need to start working out on the weight machine to build my strength in my back, shoulders and arms. If you would like...

    Post your Vehicles!

Another favorite of mine is the circus cart! And my chariot. In its former life it was a big horse, racing chariot. Hubby modified it so I can drive it with three minis! And my Heartwood buggy that Hubby built for me! I am the most blessed person!

    An Eight hitch

I wouldn't recommend driving a four by yourself for safety reasons, however, we must sometimes do what we have to do to get where we want to be. I'm pretty confident in my minis and know their personalities and who is likely to cause an issue. I am on high alert when working by myself and have...

    An Eight hitch

I teach my horse's to stand. Whoa means whoa. My wheelers are really good at standing once hitched. I then back my lead into place, tell them whoa and run the lines. If it's a green pair in front then I will leave them tied to the hitch rail till I'm ready to mount the box then undo the halters...

    An Eight hitch

Thank you. As long as I don't stress it too bad it should heal well. They got it all so I'm good. ?

    An Eight hitch

I've just had the one drive so far. We are in for horrible heat this week, which timing is good as I had a skin cancer taken off my back Thursday and am not suppose to be stretching it any while it heals. Timing is everything! I will be driving my lead pair a lot to get them really good and...
