Are you having Rain or Snow this week?

No rain here, it is still much too cold for that. Happily it is less cold than it was, though today there is a cold wind. Still --we do not have high winds and near zero visibility like they do just east of here. We have not had any real snow in 2 weeks. So, I count this all as a win and say...

    Choosing show halter

I show in cable halters. My white faced chestnuts show in black/gold nosebands, my white faced bay showed in a black/silver noseband. As I recall my silver bay pinto wore the black/gold and my palomino and chestnut pintos wore black/silver. Those are Victor halters so have plain rolled patent...

Wondering difference between Mini and Shetland horses

Miniatures were officially named in 1972, when the ASPC created the American Miniature Horse Registry. Here is a brochure I received from ASPC in 1973. Note the reference to AMHR in the bottom corner.

Why I have been missing for the past 5 years

Welcome back! I am sorry to hear you have had a difficult few years--especially sorry to hear you lost your husband that way. Retirement/part time work is awesome--i retired in mid April and now work half time at a new job. Full retirement would be better but hay is expensive and I have a lot...

    Traveling

Agree. I have horses and no help, so I simply do not go anywhere. Even when the horses have bales out and water for 2 days--i prefer to be able to check on them 2x a day. I like to know there is no one out, no one stuck in a fence, no one injured or suddenly ill, no problem with predators--and...

Wondering difference between Mini and Shetland horses

Thank you for the compliments on my Tim (Plattes Untimely). LOL yes he gets treats. He is a chestnut sabino pinto.

Wondering difference between Mini and Shetland horses

There are shetlands and then there are American shetlands. The American shetlands are most certainly not more stocky--they are generally more refined and leggy, more big horse proportioned than the majority of Miniatures. Here is one of my Classic American Shetlands--my mini Saddlebred!

Remember the grief this woman gave people here?

I don't remember that one Marsha; I do remember the old fellow in Iowa who had a bunch of starving horses with some eye injuries, cancer and such. People rescued some and he kept some; the local sheriff at the time insisted there was no problem, some of the horses were just old was his excuse...

Remember the grief this woman gave people here?

I am not sure she was really on the forum but she would monitor it. She threatened lawsuits against anyone that posted negative stuff about her guide horse program.

    Your weather week of 1/28/19

My boy Venture is much better--walking around with his usual springy walk--his nuisance brother is out again (stayed in his proper place a whole 36 hours) but when he got in with Venture tonight Venture just went in his shed. "Leave me alone!!" So, looks like it was just a muscle injury--thank...

    How Many Harnesses???

I think the Camptown harness also comes in mini size--that is the one I would choose if I wanted another harness. Camptown harnesses are lovely. I have 4 Ozark.carriage harnesses--2 mini and 2 small pony. I also have a training harness from Herrons and I have some extra parts so I can make one...

So pretty and green. And warm. We are white. Our Colorado low has arrived and so now it is cold and windy and snowy. So snowy.

    Your weather week of 1/28/19

Only 3 to water? I have 43 of them. Do I stay dry while watering? No, I generally slop water on myself. My pants get wet and then they freeze. My gloves get wet and my hands freeze ( I carry extra gloves in my pocket so I can have dry hands to get back to the house!) I hate winter! I chop ice...

    Paddock size

I have 10 and 11 hand ponies and my ideal dry lots for them are 60'x120'. They have sufficient exercise room in those corrals. My 'sick or injured' pen is 24x40' and it is not large enough for a pony to get sufficient exercise. I have a couple corrals that are more square, about 60'×60', and...

-49F here this morning, no idea what windchill is. Town is -40F and windchill of -62 so we must be at least that. The ponies all seem to be doing okay, only 2 need blankets. I haul water out to everyone 2x a day--no auto waters here

How do you gain an abused horse's trust?

OMG that little mule is adorable!!!

How do you gain an abused horse's trust?

An unhandled horse is much easier to bring around than one that has truly been abused. If all the horse has known is pain and fear and beatings--they do not forget that easily.

How do you gain an abused horse's trust?

To be honest, if she is extremely frightened of you, you would do best to catch her (corner her and catch her) and then handle her quietly. Pet her. Rub her face. Brush her softly. Talk to her. Give her treats. Do this every single day and in time she will settle down and learn to trust you...
