    Ticks on minis-Western PA

Hi All, I spent several hours grooming the boys this morning and found a tick embedded above Ziggy’s (pinto) eye. I was able to remove the whole thing fairly easily, but was fairly shocked. Years ago, I had full size horses in eastern PA and don’t recall ever having ticks on them. Are they just...

Uh, oh. Bloody urine from mini colts or goats.

Omg. I guess they got me, didn’t they? Thank you so much for clueing me in! I’ll keep an eye on them for awhile anyway.

Uh, oh. Bloody urine from mini colts or goats.

Help! When I fed tonight around 5:30, I found a spot of what looked to be bloody urine in the snow in the paddock. Our minis, Ziggy and Theo, share the paddock and barn with our Nigerian Dwarf goats, Ben and Jerry, so I have no clue who left it. We had 4” of fresh snow last night or I probably...

Horses and Goats and Poodles, Oh My!

Thank you! The horses are finally coming to us, even if we don’t have treats or pellets. They’re liking good scratches quite a bit.

Horses and Goats and Poodles, Oh My!

Yes, he does. His name is Theo. Believe it or lot, his dad is a very loud leopard appaloosa. Do you have a pic of Midnight? We really love our place...the house itself has some issues, but it’s shaping up pretty nicely outside. It’s not big, but big enough for all of the critters to be happy.

Horses and Goats and Poodles, Oh My!

When our minis came to us a few weeks ago, our dogs went crazy barking at them while watching them from the backyard. I finally took each dog on a leash to sniff noses with the horses through the fence. It seems to have stopped the barking. Since then, I’ve been taking a dog, leashed of course...

    hello from southwest pennsylvania!

Nice to meet you! Shorty is a beauty! I’m new to minis, too. We just got 2 weanling minis, Theo and Ziggy who are 5 months old. We’ve had them for almost 2 weeks. I live in Western PA, in Beaver County. I look forward to reading about your adventures with Shorty!

Finally getting our barn, so our boys should be here next weekend

Three of them were weaned together in one stall, so it’s what they’re used to. I don’t think it’s big enough for when they’re grown, but I think it’s ok for now.

Finally getting our barn, so our boys should be here next weekend

That makes good sense, Taz. I guess maybe I’m rushing them quicker than I should. We have all the time in the world. Do you think it’s ok to leave them in the paddock with the stall open so they could go in at will? It isn’t supposed to rain for a few days. It was rainy, then really cold and...

Finally getting our barn, so our boys should be here next weekend

Not sure if this is how the big kids do this, but this is what worked for me. I sat so I was eye-level with them in their small paddock. I put a halter inside my sweatshirt so I didn’t have to search for it. I made a loop with a lead rope by snapping it onto itself. I put the loop over my right...

Finally getting our barn, so our boys should be here next weekend

Our boys are home! The previously liver chestnut who now seems to be black is Theo and the pinto is Ziggy (our working name, but not sure it fits). ❤️🐴🐴❤️ They seem to be doing pretty well. We had a thunderstorm with hail that finally got them to go into the stall where they got thoroughly...

    Acorns!

I’m so sorry to read about Cottontail. Your vet is a jerk and I don’t blame you for feeling like smacking him, but I have to agree with you about it just raising your blood pressure. Take the time to grieve your girl. I’m sure she knew that she was much loved. Hang in there. ❤️

Finally getting our barn, so our boys should be here next weekend

We went to our local shed company and looked at run-in sheds from Fisher Sheds out of Ohio. We wound up getting one 8x18 with 2 stalls and a feed room. I’m kicking myself that we didn’t get it larger. Last year we had this building built onsite by JDM Structures, also out of Ohio. I wish I’d...

Help! Trying to find a pasture mate....

Yes, I’m glad to read this, too.In all my years with horses, I only ever had one gelding and other than hosing his sheath out, I never dealt with sheath cleaning. I wasn’t sure how to deal with it with the minis...they’re so close to the ground and I have a bad knee, so...

Finally getting our barn, so our boys should be here next weekend

Back in July, we put a deposit on a 2 stall barn that was supposed to be here in late September/early October. We found our colts at the end of July. They were weaned at the end of September and were ready to go October 12th. Due to lumber shortages courtesy of the pandemic, the barn delivery...

    Toxic trees

I read that black locust trees are bad...we unfortunately have a bunch of them and they’re hard to rake because the leaves are so small.

    Doesn't like grooming?

Years ago I had 2 full-size horses that I field boarded. Cocklebur perms were a serious thing, often eliminating any possibility of riding when I had to spend hours picking them out. I had forgotten all about them until we moved here. We had a terrible time with cockleburs in our poodles’ hair...

Our boys are coming home in mid-October

Thank you! Your boys are beautiful! I’m sure we’ll have as much fun with ours as you do with yours. We’re still waiting to hear back from our barn folks, I was given a timeline of the first week of October. It’s making me a little crazy to not have a scheduled date. We still have to get a...
