Items for keeping minis on your property for the first time

I am ecstatic for you, there is nothing like having your horses right at home to care for and love on! This is my first year with horses on our new property (no animals on this land before) and I'm still learning what works for us, the horses, and the land. I'm anxious for our first winter, we...

Slow feed net over a round bale?

You're welcome! The free choice hay will be a blessing to help them transition. I also pull chunks of hay halfway through some of the holes so they have some easy spots and they get the idea of pulling hay out. Please keep us updated when you get your net, share pictures and your experience!

    D&B Training and Progress Journal

It's been a stormy past couple of days so I've spent more time inside gathering ideas for training and enrichment for the boys. I've only been able to sporadically train this month so we do the easy things - Butters just loves leading around the pasture and through obstacles but he has also...

Slow feed net over a round bale?

Hay nets are a wonderful thing for reducing waste and slowing down consumption, especially with round bales. With any net it is important to prevent frustration which leads to aggressive eating from the nets, resulting in possible injury to horse (and net). If the horse has never eaten from a...

    Keeping tails clean

They can definitely have a problem lifting with a heavy tail. Hairy cob owners will cut out a section of the underside of the tail so it still appears full and long but reduces the weight significantly. It would be well worth a try!

    Keeping tails clean

I know some horse people do use tail bags consistently and just take them off every so often to clean/brush and reset the bag. Its good to make sure it won't be easy for her to catch the tail/bag on something that could rip it off. Coincidentally I was just reading about hair care in the gypsy...

    Christmas photos

Billy looks adorable in his festive wear and that tree skirt looks great on him! What a great idea to use those skirts as decorative blankets, I imagine they would be easy to modify too. Dapper Dan is smiling down at you and Billy keeping up the traditions ❤️

    Aggie Update

This is an incredibly heartwarming story, so many behavioral issues or personality quirks can be traced to pain. We think they are good at hiding pain but they often express their pain, just in ways we are not familiar with. This is well timed too, I have had some concerns with my yearling...

You're very welcome! I've had to really lower my standards for what my boys will get into, but they are still babies so I'm hopeful they improve with age. The tape should definitely help keep him from taking a bite out.

    D&B Training and Progress Journal

It's only been a month but it has felt like much longer with all the changes and good progress we have made. Butters was gelded last month and it is likely a coincidence but he is thoroughly enjoying and looking forward to our training sessions now. I offer regular breaks during training but he...

    Billy

I've been noticing a bit more padding on my boys too but I'm telling myself it will be good for winter! I'll have to start thinking about changing their hay feeding though, need to find that happy medium between winter warmth and metabolic concerns 😅

Cute pics shorts and more of my adorable Rosie!

You have taken great care of her mane and it shows! My boy had his mane roached by the rescue due to extreme burr matting, just a couple months ago it was finally long enough to lay down instead of being a perpetual mohawk. It is so thick now, I can't wait to see what his final length will be...

Cute pics shorts and more of my adorable Rosie!

Rosie makes a wonderful unicorn/pegasus! Her braided mane is to die for. I hope my little unicorn grows a mane as beautiful as hers, it is really magical ✨

Welcome from California! Mother nature can't figure out fall over here but today is nice and brisk, the leaves are finally starting to change color. I look forward to hearing of your adventures with Citi - I highly recommend agility and obstacle courses for both exercise and enrichment for their...

What's your favorite way to determine how tall your foal will get?

I'm a bit obsessed about figuring out my yearlings' adult heights, mostly for fun but also because I hope for them to provide future lead line rides for little ones, so fingers are crossed for taller! From what I've read, the string test was thought to be the most accurate, but now I'm seeing...

    Transport Questions

There is something about mini donkeys in trucks that just work! I too transported a yearling mini donkey in the cab of a truck for a friend, front passenger seat pushed all the way up and he stood on the floor between the back and front seats. We didn't fold up the back seats because that's...

    Weanling woes

Congratulations on your new babies! Your filly is very smart, eating grain can be painful with ulcers and high calcium foods like alfalfa can be soothing with ulcers (like antacids for humans) so along with all her other symptoms she is definitely telling you she's feeling pain. She will be...

Fall is in full swing here, I'm mourning summer but the boys are loving the crisp air and lack of flies. We have been focusing on hoof handling for the past few weeks starting with the fronts, we began with targeting the fetlock to my hand and added a vocal cue "foot" - Dio has excelled at...
