Life questions from a 20 something year old

What happy news! Looking forward to pictures, especially when your little one meets a mini for the first time! 🥰

    Fairier

When you find a good farrier, treasure him/her! We have two. One for the minis and one for the full sized.......The second one also does chiropractic work. As for clipping? I HATE it.

A little bit worried about Cushings

I agree with a lot of what's been posted. Do another worming in a couple of weeks and increase her protein with some grain. Doing both should address her belly. It's highly unlikely she has cushings. As for her coat? Some of ours are weird about shedding evenly too, but if it's getting hot...

    Long Toes

Agree with having a vet check done AND that you be present, so you raise all of you concerns with him/her.

    Ours have the shafts up.

    Mini mare is possibly pregnant

Sometimes a mare will "suck up" their milk. I've taken a warm wet wash cloth and gently washed their bag, including between the teets to encourage her to relax. If you can't get some on a test strip, at least get some on your fingers to feel how sticky it is.

    Long Toes

Some trainers for driving will leave longer toes to encourage more animation, ie. forcing them to lift their feet higher when trotting. Personally, I don't think it's wise for the horse's long term health.

Coloring your horse for the show ring

I HATE razoring. And back when we used to show (it's been over 10 years) The show rules were that you couldn't alter a horse's natural color, only "enhance". So people would darken a bay's points on their legs, for example.... or dye a black horse's mane that was sun bleached.

Be sure to let us know how it went.

    Raising a Colt

Once you find a halter for him, attach a lead to him and tie it to his mom's halter, then take them for walks. He'll tend to want to walk with her and it will teach him about pressure and release. You can do that now.

    Hay net mesh size

To be honest, Abby, I've never liked hay NETS. I've seen too many horses (all sizes) who got their feet caught in them. One horse - when we were showing at the state fair - got his foot caught, panicked and ended breaking his leg. We have preferred the Hay BAG, instead, and usually only used...

    Baby Drawing

What a great job! You should have folks send you photos that you can draw from and make some extra money!

Bottle feeding a three month old?

If she is already sharing grain with her mom, milk pellets are good.....mixed with foal grain or a 14 percent grain......believe it or not Senior pellets work best because they are high in protein and vitamins/minerals and easier to chew.

Bottle feeding a three month old?

Personally, bottle feeding her at 3 months would probably confuse her as she is most likely been sharing mom's food for a while. I would provide milk pellets plus an appropriate grain available for young horses. A lot of her issues will be emotional and psychological separation. If you are...

Kandy due soon, need help determining when!

Congrats! Love his spotted butt! 😍 PS: Just went back and enlarged the photos.......He's got a nice head too! I agree that you've got a "keeper".

    Puppy maiden mare

Awww.........She did it! She read the book and even produced a sweet filly! Look forward to seeing her unfolded. (Love how the mom is keeping a close eye on the camera!)

    training question--in my space?

You of all people should be able to READ whether your horses are being bossy or affectionate!

Opinions on if my mare is pregnant is appreciated

If she is going into foaling position (dropping), the foal won't be as active because it doesn't have much room to move in.

Can you fix a really bad clip job?

For most horses, a #10 is usually best, against the grain, for the body. A #30 or 40 for detail on the face...(where you plan to apply make-up). This is why I recommend doing the first clip before the first show several weeks prior. That first overall clip will NEVER look perfect. It will...

Opinions on if my mare is pregnant is appreciated

I don't trust externals either! And as for horses showing Heat while pregnant? It's not common, but it does happen.....as Taz pointed out. It's sort of like a human female who has light periods during her pregnancy, early on.
