    Introducing Me and my Mini

Welcome Aboard! She's adorable! It WILL be fun to see how she sheds out. And YES, no matter how long you've worked with horses (any size), I agree that there's ALWAYS something to learn.

How much should I feed my mini?

Have you done the "touch test" to see if she's underweight, overweight, or in good weight? Figuring out feed amounts in winter is difficult because they always can use some extra hay, so I DITCH that 2% rule. (I haven't heard of the 1% rule.) Have you weighed a flake of hay? To give you an...

    Winter weather

If you do the warm water method again, dry their hooves off with a towel, then spray the bottoms/inside the hoof with cooking spray. You'll probably have to do it once a day AT LEAST.

    Winter weather

I feel for you, Taz! I keep thinking that I should buy a Toboggan as a backup for when we have to push the hay cart around IN THE SNOW. People who don't live in snow country don't understand how hard it is.

    Winter weather

Yep. The MOST IMPORTANT thing to help keep horses warm is increasing their hay. We just got hit with a cold snap..... 4 inches of snow and more coming this evening. Temps down close to single digits at night. AND our ATV has come down with the flu, which is what we use to pull the hay trailer...

    New girl in town!

Healing Light being sent to you. I think we all understand the pain. <HUG>

    New owner

Welcome to the Forum and the wonderful world of MINIS!!! What are you feeding now? Did your seller tell you what THEY feed? Is your cute new one in good weight? (Rub your fingers down her back and down her sides.) When they have the winter fuzzies, it's hard to judge their condition. So it...

    Deworming....

Ditto to what Taz posted. We also use a liquid Ivermectin. Some are ok with squirting the syringe into their mouths, but the pissy ones get a small amount of grain in their OWN dish with the wormer squirted onto it. They have always eaten all their grain. (The liquid is put ON TOP so none is...

    Contraption

Agree -- YARD ART! I know very little about driving, unlike the husband. BUT! That looks SCARY!!!!! My first thought was that you could take it to a welder, remove the center atrocity and install two staffs, but after all that expense, you might as well buy a new Easy Entry!!!! Right?

    My Mare is Possibly Pregnant.

Pitter Patter, I do NOT think the powdered colostrum is enough. Either Snickers will provide enough. Or, if not, feed your new foal the powdered until your vet can either locate colostrum from another mare. (Some breeding farms save colostrum from their mares and freeze it.) And the last...

    My Mare is Possibly Pregnant.

Having a foal allergic to its mother's colostrum is a NIGHTMARE. (Also called an RH Factor Foal). I'm so sorry Ryan that you had to go through that. If you catch the signs early enough (like the first 24 hrs.) People can locate colostrum from another source to bottle feed, keep the foal from...

    My Mare is Possibly Pregnant.

Pitter Patter, You asked about flushing your mare........ We've done it both within 24 hours of foaling and during foal heat. It's important to go in when the cervix is open. For a couple of years (over 15 years ago) we kept having late abortions or dead foals and our vet suggested we flush...

    question about my mare

You might want to get the type of neosporin that helps with pain too, so she won't be temped to rub.

    Feeding grain....

Remember, these little ones can live into their 30's! ;) I have a few that are over 30 this year and one who is nudging 35!

    Stifle joint

We bought a stallion with a stifle issue years ago. We already intended to use him as a driving gelding, so it wasn't too upsetting. The surgery was simple and quick. He wasn't "laid up" for much more than a few days, as I recall. The vet gelded him at the same time. Our very favorite horse...

    Mini mare is possibly pregnant

Depends on what the runny stuff looks like. Is it white? Yellow? Or Greenish? If it's white, don't worry too much, but when it's thick and yellow or greenish, you'll need have a vet check her and probably put her on an antibiotic. Have you taken her temp?

    Mini mare is possibly pregnant

Can't help you with a home preg test. We either have an ultra sound done or start WATCHING/FEELING at feeding time. She should be far enough along (6 months) that you could feel some movement or a "flutter" when your mare is eating, or just after. In another month the movements will be more...

    Feeding grain....

So much depends on the needs of each horse..... For us, we have a few youngish to middle age that are in good weight.....then we have a number of older ones who are hard keepers.......plus a few older ones who are hard keepers that get "owie feet" if fed too much regular grain or stay on pasture...

    Mini-Shetland jealous of my children!

Totally agree with Dragon Hill. It's what I call : Finding The Right FIT when it comes to horses, dogs, and even cats. I bet there is a potential owner out there (without kids!) who will understand the dynamics of your pony's mental state and be able to handle it. PS: I just saw Taz's post...
