    Wade Burns

I just read yesterday via an AMHA post on Face Book that Wade Burns of Lucky Four Farms has passed away. Larry and I are sad to hear this. He was a good man, a breeder of show quality miniatures, and also happened to be the breeder of our beloved "Shammie", a Pembroke Corgi (now deceased too.)...

    Stall advice

We've always had 12x12 stalls in every barn. It's a good size for when a mini has to be kept indoors for several days and also is good for foaling out. I agree with Taz that the gate height should be just high enough for their heads so they can see out, but NOT jump out.

    Bot flies?? and goopy eyes

My only advice would be using the comb to remove the eggs and to keep up the wormer. Not sure if the horse fly spray works on the eggs or not. For goopy eyes? I wipe their eyes with unscented non-alcohol Baby Wipes. For some reason, after doing it a couple of times their eyes clear up...

EXACTLY WHAT TREATS CAN YOU FEED YOUR MINI

Cheerios for an occasional treat or training bribe for horses are fine. There's the typical apples, carrots, even whole wheat bread! I've never offered it, but watermelon can be very popular to some horses from posts I've seen. Pitter Patter, I think you covered a lot of "no-no's" for...

Madean mare do you think she is ready she is very sweaty

Agree that she looks like she's dropped. That means the foal is getting itself into birthing position. And you said that the vet said she could be 4 weeks away??? But you also said the liquid from her teats was sticky??? A mare who is 4 weeks away does NOT produce sticky! It means the...

    Maden mare help please

Being a maiden mare getting liquid to test with is AWESOME. Maidens are rather unpredictable when it comes to outward signs. Sharing info about milk test strips below. http://www.miniatureventures.com/using_milk_test_strips.html

    Creating a dry lot?

How about dividing your area up? Leave a small area with grass and maintain/water it, so they can go in for a snack a few hours a week. The other area would be closer to their shelter and you can mow it down very very close to the ground. Do NOT water it. Your little beavers will make their...

    Ready Now?

Ummm.... Taz? "almost full height at 4 months"??? More like TWELVE months with another inch or two spread out slowly for a couple more years. Larry and I tell folks that minis do about 95 percent of their growth in their first year.

Who was asking about mini horse transport?

I was just on Face Book and stumbled on a public Group called, "Miniature Horse Transport USA". It looks like a place where people can say (for example), "I need a horse transported from xx location to xx location in early October." And then either professional haulers can respond OR private...

    Questions about my mare

Have you considered giving her a gentle luke warm bath with a Tea Tree Shampoo? You can use a human brand if you can't find a horse or dog one. It does look like a possible allergy. It may even be a sort of mange which is caused by mites. I'd also worm her with Ivermectin which helps with...

    Finding a Farrier

It's been so long since we've paid someone to load by hand, I'm not sure! Who are going to load and who is going to UNload? Are they the folks you are buying from? It sort of makes a difference in my opinion.... I think you are being very generous.

    Finding a Farrier

If it's with a machine, not necessary.....but by hand? Definitely.

    Finding a Farrier

Our hay guy loads for us, but not manually. He has the equipment. Sure doesn't hurt to ask. He may even know some young men who can help UNload.

    Finding a Farrier

Oh my Gosh! Sure hope the weekend gives you time to do some healing! Is it possible to scout out one or two young fellows who can buck the hay for you? I've also been "taken out" by a dog AND some horses over the years....... Two of the three incidents had me at the ER.... Yay. Listen to your...

New born miniature horse leg deformity question.

The three most common "deformities" new born foals have with their legs is, 1. Being "windswept" as Cayuse mentioned above. That can affect all four legs. And 2. Being down on their on their hocks (usually their rear legs), and 3. "knock-knee-ed", also usually their rear legs. If you do an...

Help with Show Halter color and style

We've always used the thicker noseband on the "thicker" nose (ie. quarterhorse type head). The narrow noseband for the more Arab type head. I've see folks put the wider style on the refined Araby face and it weighs now the whole look. Does that make sense?

    Finding a Farrier

We also have to tarp our hay. (We buy 2 ton at a time twice a month from a local grower.) My only suggestion about tarping is to also allow a bit of air flow or the tarp(s) will sweat and hold moisture which will cause mold. Pallets are good. They allow air to pass through under the bottom...

    Finding a Farrier

Field Hay probably equals what we call "pasture grass"...... It's a mix of different grasses and may even include a little alfalfa. That's what our big pasture is, where we turn out some of our herd.
