How do you gain an abused horse's trust?

I felt really guilty about my little mule's halter. He came with a nylon halter on and there was no way that he could be handled to take it off. I knew that once off I'd not be able to put it back on again. I think I had to leave it on for about three months, until he trusted me enough that I...

How do you gain an abused horse's trust?

As chandab indicated, time and patience are your friends.

Anyone elses minis do this "Just Because"

:) Ha! My Nozzy will knock over any regular water bucket. I have to either tie one securely to a fence, or use a 25 gallon tub. If I try to hang a water bucket in his stall he will scratch his bum on it.

How much do miniature horses cost?

He surprised the man I got him from as well. ;) No deception on the seller's part, but he'd purchased the mule at an exotic livestock auction and that's what they said he was and their vet had even put that on the Coggins. Because the little mule was so wild his age wasn't truly known until...

How much do miniature horses cost?

My minis were not expensive to purchase and in fact I was given three, but I sure did pay for vet and dental care for the little horses. I paid for the gelding procedure for Nozzy and that was about $350. The mare I was given had been starved so required some specialized care; she also...

    Grazing vs. Feed

I've had two of my miniatures develop metabolic issues. Nozzy and his pasturemate Nigel both developed Insulin Resistance when they were about six years old. Nigel had none of the outward signs of a metabolic disorder and simply foundered one December. He had to be put down only six months...

    Grazing vs. Feed

Eee - my minis would explode if they had that much grazing. ;) I have one mini who is insulin resistant and he can't have any grass at all. My pasture is only about two acres total with the diet paddock separate for Nozzy. Depending on the type and quality of pasture you have I'd say that...

    Water in the winter

That's too bad about the bucket cozies. I can't remember the name of the kind I have (old brainzzz). ;) Winter sure can be challenging. We had a flash freeze here (NY) overnight so what was wet is now frozen.

    Water in the winter

I don't have electric to my barn so I have to carry water down multiple times a day. In the severe cold it's a challenge. I have water bucket cozys that I wrap the buckets in, and that helps, but little minis and mule love to play with those. Switching out cold buckets for warm ones also...

    Cute, little... and a bully!

It's still early days yet. Gelding the stallion as soon as possible will help with the herd dynamics and as Marsha said, not add to your herd. ;) When I add any mini to my little gang (after quarantine) I find that it takes at least three months for everyone to settle. My little mare Sarah...

Lunging my 4 year old Paint Mare

She's a beautiful mare. I agree with you. You want to stop this behavior immediately. Very dangerous.

    Vitamin E and Selenium

I believe it was the selenium that most concerned my veterinarian. I would have to ask him again and return to clarify.

    Vitamin E and Selenium

My veterinarian told me it's very important to do the blood test first prior to administering any Vitamin E/Selenium supplement as too much of that can be bad too. I was sure my Thoroughbred would be deficient and had him tested and his results came in just fine. It was a surprise, considering...

    Another newbie

Helloo! I think many of us that own or have owned full sized horses, and now have minis, can't believe how long we've gone without having the wee ones in our lives!

    What? Him? A Dwarf?

I don't see it either. Perhaps the person was seeing the awkward stage in July when everything seemed out of whack with your cute little guy (love that baby stage of growth) . His head and expression in that July photo could have given the person a little idea of a dwarfy-look but the rest of...
