    Thought he was lame again

Sounds like your guy is a great prospect for trick training! It'd keep his mind sharp and be non-taxing to his system! Good luck!

    Sedation Dentistry

Did you tell them you were having radiation? Much of the time dental work while undergoing chemo or radiation is a no-no. You might check with your radiologist/oncologist/etc. my mom (and many other cancer patients i know)was advised to have all her dental work done before she began treatment...

    And the results are in.........

I'm sending you prayers!! I've been down this road here in rural KY (Owensboro) too. It *is* survivable -- even if you get one of the "worse" types. I'm glad to see you're going to Vandy. They have a pretty good program there. Before you make a definitive decision about your treatment, I'd...

    Mammogram results

I'm from Owensboro & I have to say I would never come here for treatment of anything serious or potentially serious. I was diagnosed with Stage II invasive ductal carcinoma while I was 20 weeks pregnant. The surgeon here that diagnosed me sounded great, but he was rude and easily disgruntled...

    Rope halters for minis

Just like anything, chains and rope halters can be misused. If I had $$ I'd buy at least one rope halter for the minis I deal with, but I find that wrapping the chain around the noseband gives the horse just enough whoa while not digging into their nose. With my QH I used a rope halter & he did...

    halters under driving bridles

Another option some of you 'open' driving bridle folks should check out are the combination halter-bridles. I had one for my QH & loved it. I'm not sure they make them for minis, but they would be a good option. The design is fairly simple & someone that's talented could probably engineer their...

    Minis braking on hills

Trailer ing out isn't really an option. There probably isn't any reason to worry. The only driving they'll get is probably minimal. I'll carefully consider my option when & if I get to that point.

    Round Bales

With my bigs I fed round bales. My dad built a feeder for them that raised the bales off the ground at least a foot and was also covered. We put hog gates (narrow slotted metal rod fence thingie) on the long sides (it held 2 big round bales) and I built an x shaped thingie on both ends out of...

    Minis braking on hills

With some of the stories on the accident thread I'm thinking my first action should be for my husband to put a foot brake on the cart so I don't have to get out! :-) Annabellarose -- yeah, I had no problem pointing my QH mare at any hill with the cart -- up or down. She was built like a tank...

    Horse-Related Injuries

My husband (then fiancé) has 2 serious horse accidents in his 2 total times of being on a horse. The first happened when he was 7. He was trail riding up behind his uncle on a full sized Appy. The details aren't entirely clear, but the gist says that the Appy wanted to be leader, but wasn't...

    Feeding minis

I do kind if feel helpless with these little guys. I'm sure this wont be popular, but I've considered telling my neighbor to euthanize these two boys. They spend quite a bit of time in pain due to their feet/founder/laminitis. Since winter, there has been an improvement, but after this last...

    Advice for restarting a horse?

I'm doing the same thing kind of - the guys I'm working have been pasture pets for most of their lives. I'm lunging, ground driving, hand walking, and basically acting like its never been done before. I've found that's almost always the safest option. Good luck!

    Feeding minis

So for my really fluffy guy, I'd probably best best to muzzle him most of the day. Exercise from grazing right now is about all I think his Little legs & feet can stand. To my knowledge these guys have been on this same pasture the entire time they've been owned by this gentleman.

    Feeding minis

Ok, I have a background in backyard full-sized horse ownership. However, since I'm horseless and my elderly neighbor is having mobility problems, I'm dealing with 4 minis & a Belgian. I offer advice to the elderly owner, but he is the one footing the bill and the one living with the horses. I...

    Tails

The minis I deal with all have drag the ground tails. Although they do get dirty and stepped on, I've not noticed any problems. I "banged" Sundance's tail this winter, but it's already dragging again. He also has a mane that's pretty long. These 4 guys are on 24/7 turn out with a Belgian. They...

Accidents you lived to tell about...

Hopefully this isn't scary or verbotten here, but I was replying to another thread and thought of my accident with my QH cart horse. I thought it'd be interesting to read other people's experiences. Heck, we can even learn from each other's mistakes. I bred my QH mare & raised and trained the...

    Minis braking on hills

By saying track up/down are you meaning to take it a diagonal line and zig zag back and forthcoming the hill? The main hill I'm concerned about is the driveway. On one side is a bank with the house on it. The bank has a super steep slope and is taller than me. Immediately after the house is the...

    Iggy working now

For training purposes, when I trained my QH filly to drive, I used a wire fence stretcher as my single tree for logging. I had 3 hooks on it. I had the middle hook bent closed and the others bent just a bit further back. The chain stayed put because I'd bent the hooks just enough. Plus I had it...

Keeping the Traces on the Tree

My old horse cart initially had the leather lace style trace-keepers on it, but I didn't like them, so I got a new tree to accept metal hitch pins with the big circle that folds closed (lynch pins I think they're called).
