    Ration Balancer

We use Triple Crown Gold and love it. My minis get a half cup twice a day.

    Patty cloke training. Wom rebel

Patty got out of minis 6-7 years ago or so and moved from Washington to one of the southern states.

Coloring your horse for the show ring

Oh, I clip my guys too but only with a 10 blade over the body and face, leaving whiskers and eyelashes as they need those to feel things and protect their eyes. Come Spring I can't wait for it to get warm enough to give Mike and Eden a bath and get rid of the winter coat.

Coloring your horse for the show ring

I always wanted to know -WHY? Why can't people show their horses as they are without dyeing, coloring, or, the worst, shaving and clipping their heads? I don't get it and that's probably why I dislike breed shows so much. At least we can do carriage classes without all of the above.

    Manure Question

Sounds exactly like my gelding. When he first moved in and my friend was cleaning paddocks she wondered how her big pony had managed to poop in Mike's run. His clump together and look just like the bigger horses. My mare is just the opposite - lots of tiny individual balls. I much prefer Mike's...

    Fly spray

I have used and like the Equiderma spray. Neem oil and citronella for the most part. It smells great and works. I often spray myself after the horse before driving to keep the bugs off me too. https://equiderma.com/product/neem-aloe-natural-horse-spray-32oz/

    Breeding?

I think there are lots of opportunities in WA and OR for high quality stallion services. We are just starting show season - if you can I'd suggest going to some of the local shows and talk to people. Get to know them and their horses and I bet you will find some good prospects.

    Breeding?

My first question is - why buy a stallion? Why not just breed your mare and not have to worry about caring for another horse? The money you would pay for the stallion can be used to pay vet care for the mare and foal When it comes to breeding it sounds like you're starting out right by having...

Best Place to Buy a Cart

Jerald is the most common brand of mini show carts. I know there are also a couple others. There is a FB group for miniature carts for sale that might lead to something for you https://www.facebook.com/groups/miniponycarts/

    Which Ration Balancer?

We feed Triple Crown Gold balancer. The minis like it and it has minimal calories along with various supplements. I give each of mine a total of 1 cup a day

    Dry skin?

I would look into a balancer to feed along with your hay. We feed Triple Crown Gold Balancer and it really makes a difference for my guys. It has supplements for coat, skin, gut health, joints, and general vitamins and minerals that might be missing in your hay or other feed. My minis get 1/2c...

Should I get a vet out?

I'm always one to have the vet out if I'm concerned. In cases like this if there is any damage getting it checked and treated immediately is key.

    Online/Video Training??

Kendra Gale has some great online courses. They range from people just getting into minis and driving to those looking to improve their horses. It might be a good place to start. Home - Miniature Horsemanship ™

    Positive Reinforcement 101!

I am 100% on the R+ train. It makes so much difference in the emotions around training. I highly recommend both Kendra Gale and Alexandra Kurland as resources. Glad to see you found it works for you too :-)

    Feeding grain....

Ours get fed twice a day. 1.5-2# of orchard grass or timothy along with 1/2c of Triple Crown Gold Balancer and 1/2c of either Haystacks Alfalfa pellets or Haystacks Special Blend. Even with that, I need to watch to make sure they aren't getting fat and cut down as needed.

Finally got to hitch my "new" cart to my "new" mini.

I'd move the saddle back a bit so it isn't on his withers. You might need a longer girth to do so - you want the saddle to sit as flat as possible for him. You could also remove the pad if you needed a bit more length for the girth. The breeching does need to drop just a bit. I'd also run your...

    Need help?

Congrats on your baby! I would like to suggest not using punishment on her and instead look into positive reinforcement. Show her proper behavior and reward what you want over punishing what you don't want her to do. Horses respond very well to it and I have found they learn better and enjoy it...

    My mini is a yak!

I would only clip if you are working him and he gets too hot. Otherwise, most minis are perfectly fine in the winter with no blankets unless it gets very cold.

    Wormer for minis

I would suggest that, before using any wormer, have a fecal done. I don't want to give my mini any wormer if it is not needed. Plus by doing a fecal test you can find out just what if any parasites you have and the best course of wormer to use if needed.

Help! Trying to find a pasture mate....

Sheath cleaning is a controversial subject. Horses in the wild never have anyone cleaning them and I've read quite a few articles by vets who don't see a need unless the horse is showing issues. For my guy, I always have the vet check for beans when he gets his teeth done. Other than that, I...
