Mini Rubbing Hind End on Bucket

I'd ask your vet to run a fecal test to see if there are still parasites. He's obviously itchy. If the weather is not bad where you are or you have access to warm water and a dryer I'd give him a bath in case he's got an irritant in his coat. Did he do this at all before you got him?

    Any advise would help.

Thank you for taking these guys in and working to get them healthy again! My personal preference would be to have a fecal float done before you worm them. In their condition having the help of a vet that has dealt with malnutrition will be invaluable. I would not want to take their systems any...

    Cart shafts popping up

The link you have there is for the type of harness that has an overgirth strap on the saddle. If you need the wrap strap type you'll want this one: https://chimacumtack.com/product/belly-band-traditional-with-wrap-straps/ I personally feel that having breeching is always a good idea as it is...

    Body clipping in October???

I feel it all depends on what you expect the weather to be in the next few months. Here in the Northwest I don't clip after the middle of August because our winters can be cold and wet. If you're around to play the blanket game if needed (on at night, off in the morning, repeat). You could...

    Cart shafts popping up

If you have a show harness they will usually have a long strap that wraps around the shaft and then buckles to the girth. For the show ring this acts as a hold down and "brakes" of a sense as the cart will not be able to move forwards or backwards once wrapped. I found that Chimacum sells a...

    Cart shafts popping up

Do you have a picture of your cart and harness? There should be an overgirth that buckles to hold the shafts down. Depending on the style of harness it could be a wrap strap instead of a buckle strap. You can see the one on my harness - it sits behind the girth buckle and holds the shafts down.

    Best Show Feed Plan!

I think the most important thing, regardless of what you feed, is to make sure and weigh all the food. I found if you don't then you will end up with a fat pony :) My girl Eden gets 3lbs of timothy a day along with 1c of orchard grass pellets and a 1/2c of Safe Choice Perform. On days it is not...

    Piddle on command

Many endurance riders teach their horses to urinate on command. From what I've seen it is pretty easy to teach if you can capture the behavior. They will whistle a tune when the horse is going and over time you just have to start whistling and they will go when you want them to :-)

    Who does CDE?

I just noticed you're in Seattle. Did you sign up for the EI CDE in August? If you're available the end of June you should come out for Kitchen Sink, our first general fun event of the season. I'll be there with Eden and a whole group of mini drivers. If you ever want to come and see my...

    Who does CDE?

I've read your blog posts and articles which helped a lot in deciding to go a full collar. I can see the difference in how my guys go so it didn't take long to realize it was best for all of us!

    Who does CDE?

My main purpose for getting a mini was to compete in Combined Driving events. I purchased a Bellcrown Minicrown last year and love it! Very sturdy, comfortable, and good over rough ground. Both my 36" gelding and my 35" mare can pull it with no issues. The only change I've decided to make is to...

How much do miniature horses cost?

Both of my minis were on the higher end of cost but I wouldn't trade them for anything. Mike, the one pictured in my avatar, was a $1500 find locally. He's the best little guy for teaching people to drive and has the ability to go further with the right driver. My mare Eden is HOF and from...

Do you currently own miniature horses?

I have two miniatures, a gelding and a mare. Both are Combined Driving competitors. My mare has also competed in pleasure shows at halter and driving.

What age is to old to start a mini driving

10 is a great age to start!  My mare is 11 and just getting started in CDE. IMO the only time they are too old is when they can't physically pull a cart anymore. Have fun!

    Little more cart help, please!

Yes those look like the footman’s loops for this cart and would be where the breeching straps attach. If you can get longer straps that would be best. A lot depends on where and how you’re driving. If you are going down hills and need stopping power then I’d suggest longer straps. If you’re...

    Shoeing vs removable boots

Sorry for the late reply! I got mine from http://equine-jogging-shoes.com/ Just recently they dropped the price from $240/pr to $210/pr ($105/ea) and they have come out with a new model. Now that I also have a couple of Shetlands I'm thinking of getting some for them if needed. In my area it...
