    Grass Pasture & New Mini

One other thought, I have one mini that does well with pasture and his supplement and is relatively uncomplicated so far (he is almost 4). Knock on wood! I have either gotten smarter or he is a strong, healthy guy! Probably a little of both!

    Grass Pasture & New Mini

I like Nutrena, Special Care, Special Diet for the supplement and good grass hay. Just remember most minis are easy keepers and dont need the extra carbs! Good Luck with your new mare and I am sure you will get to know her needs in a few months. I had quarter horses before my mini and found them...

Gastric Ulcers / Hind Gut acidosis

She eats soaked Orchard grass. I soak it one hour and drain to remove the sugars. Not saying yours needs this but wanted to give you the details.

Gastric Ulcers / Hind Gut acidosis

My vet told me to make sure she eats predominantly grass hay to avoid a reoccurrence with the ulcer. My mare throws hay around also and will wait for me to give her the supplement instead of eating more hay. I hold off when I notice this for an hour or two to get her to consume more hay (soaked...

    Seeking ulcer treatment advice

That is a great idea. I have a vet 30 minutes away or 45 minutes away. I definitely need to think on my feet, as they say! Gathering all info in one place would be awesome.

    Seeking ulcer treatment advice

Nutrena feed is now putting probiotics and a "digestive shield" in their products. I use Special choice, special diet which is the low sugar supplement. It has been awesome for my metabolic mini.

    Allergic reactions

my vet gave my mini dexamethasone when he had a reaction to banamine. His nose and mouth swelled up within 12 hours after being given the dosage for colic. It was scary. She said its a good thing it didnt close his airways. His nose was so swollen. He has small nostrils to begin with.

    Seeking ulcer treatment advice

I used sucralfate for 5 days and backed her off of it gradually. It worked great. I had one vet say to gradually wean off and another tell me it wasn't necessary. So you pick! There is always another opinion. Sorry for the very late response but thought you might be gathering info for future...

    We are finally getting somewhere!

I am at 340 days with my mare. Looks to be progressing about like yours. I am expecting at least another week. But watching on the camera every night! Yours looks to be a little ways off too. But who knows??

Getting foal in position or Stage 1

I have cameras in the barn now compared to 25 years ago when I had a mare that I was lucky enough to walk in and catch the foal before it hit the ground. Plus I'm older now and worry too much! When the fruit is ripe, it will fall!!

My mare does the breathing hard thing too. Sounds like they are getting ready. When its time it will happen!

Getting foal in position or Stage 1

Thanks for answering back. My mare rolls several times per day and her bag is not tight and full at all. Since she is not a maiden her bag was wrinkled and not visible but lately has dropped down a little and has clear fluid if I try to squeeze a little out. She has not tried to push or isnt...

Another round of foaling or fooling has begun

I can relate to that! I just posted on the pregnant mare discussion thread. but I will repeat here My mare has been rolling the last three days, rubbing her butt, tossing head, yawning, up and down and eating like a pig. Her vulva is loose and gapes open when she is rolling. I am just...

Getting foal in position or Stage 1

My mare has been rolling the last few days, rubbing her butt, tossing head, yawning, up and down and eating like a pig. I am a little worried but am giving her until tomorrow before I trailer her into the vet to have her checked. She seems pretty worn out but continues to eat, drink and poop...

    We are finally getting somewhere!

Has she been showing any signs of phase 1 (getting foal in place)? My mare has been rolling the last few days, rubbing her butt, tossing head, yawning, up and down and eating like a pig. I am a little worried but am giving her until tomorrow before I trailer her into the vet to have her...

    We are finally getting somewhere!

Looks like your mare is right on the same schedule as mine. Cloudy milk this morning and not much of a bag. She has been irritated with biting, swishing, stomping, butt rubbing for now the 4th day. Poor baby, for both of our sakes, I hope it happens soon. Not getting much sleep! I have PH strips...
