    Suggestions? Ideas? Help needed

I could email a picture of the feeder to someone if they wanted it. Just drop me a note with your e-mail. Its pretty simple to make and all the pieces are easy to find. I have really appreciated the changes it has made for my horses and love not worrying in nasty weather about how much they need...

Chanda, thank you. I bet I can get those here or even have them shipped in. I'll have to talk to my vet and confirm that they won't cause harm if I use them occasionally (my thoughts are aspirin should not be an issue but worth getting her input anyway) Debby, I'll try to describe it... no...

DIY pros I need some ideas

In my area businesses that use pallets often stack them on the roadside with a FREE sign on them. They are always looking for someone to take them off their hands. I know of at least one farm that has used them for fencing material. I would be concerned about the gaps between the boards being...

Really Chanda? I've never heard of that. Do you know what its called? I would certainly add it to my kit if its something I could get here. It doesn't seem to take a lot to ease her thro these episodes and I'd sure try aspirin in a pinch. I do know the banamine is both a analgesic and an...

    Spring? Winter?

You have lovely horses. Our weather this year has been a bit crazy too. No snow since March and everything is a month or more early but we have still had below freezing temps some nights. Oh well, I leave the fuzz on to protect them from mosquitos which we have in abundance this year. -That and...

    Reins while driving

yup, posture is my biggest issue. I like to slouch and showing demands I sit up straight and keep my hands steady. Sometimes by the end of a show day I wonder who is tired er the horse or me. LOL. Usually I think me because I try to get my horses fit enough to be there and my core muscles do not...

Regumate is something to consider for sure. I will have to bring that up to my vet if we see a recurrence of this problem in future cycles. I'm kind of surprised she hasn't suggested it but maybe she isn't sure if I plan to breed or not breed this girl. I definitely don't plan to breed her again...

Yes MiniV, a learning experience for sure. Something that hasn't stopped in all the many years of owning horses (and dogs, cats, sheep, cows, pigs, chickens, turkeys, goldfish etc. lol) I have quite an arsenal of things to go to but my first choice is always the vet and banamine. Other than that...

Interesting idea. Its something I may have to check into if she goes back to colicing regularly. Today she has been just fine calmly eating with the others, completely back to normal. Thank goodness the problem seems to have been resolved (for this time at least).

Yes Mona. In BC Banamine is only available with a prescription and some dang rule or other says they can prescribe for future maybes. Some people find ways around it (having a vet tech in the family is a help..but I don't have one of those ) Some go out of province for it too but that hasn't...

A quick update. After many calls to friends I still had nothing. No heat in her feet, yes she was very willing to walk but preferred laying down. Gut sounds but not much and seemed a bit bloated on the left side. Finally called the vet clinic again and asked if they could prescribe a small dose...

This is a bit of a long shot. I am wondering if anyone has home remedies they try for tummy trouble in their horses. Her's the back story; I have a mare (17yrs but that isn't the issue) who is acting pretty uncomfortable today. She is laying flat out, legs elevated and stiff or on her back...

    Trimming hooves on untame mare.

At the risk of getting flamed her, I agree with Chanda's farrier. Find an old cowboy who knows how to lay the down and hog tie them. It is the way the old guys here geld their colts (I prefer tranqs and vet care but then I'm not an old cowboy either) In the case of these wild mares I would use a...

New to Minis, Lots of questions

I find slow feed nets and free choice feeding of hay to be a solution to the problem of how much to feed and helps to prevent waste too. I prefer a simple grass hay, without alfalfa (quite rich and more likely to put on weight) except with a nursing mare where the extra calcium in alfalfa can be...

    Lifted tail?

I wouldn't be too concerned, most likely just his way. Most horses lift the tail a bit as they move, a little at a walk, more at a trot and more yet when they run. I think it likely that as he grazes he is prepared for movement even if that is a slow step at a time.

    Training Deaf stallion?

Don't give up on him, there is no reason to think he can't be an excellent driving horse regardless of his lack of hearing assuming he has the right stuff in other ways. Since he doesn't understand language the way we do anyway the words are only a cue for him with a trained response to the cue...

    What's For DINNER Tonight?

tonight will just be left overs from last night. I had my BIL and SIL here for dinner so I made a huge wok full of fried rice, carrots, celery, onions, mushrooms lots of chopped fresh garlic (about a third of a cup) and fresh ginger. Rice (used leftover 'sticky' rice which is not my fav but is...

    Snow days 2016

I could use a little of that warm and dry about now. Our winter weather has been very odd. Not much snow (for us... still have about 18 inches) hardly cold(again ..for us, its been as low as -20C at night and averaged from -5C to -10C during the day) and now its barely making it below freezing...

    Post Tying.

I couldn't be more impressed! It takes so much maturity (a maturity many who are much older than you lack sadly) to recognize when you have gotten ahead of yourself. For me the first priority with my horses, since they are not a business venture, is that I be enjoying my time with them. If I...

    Danger with mane knots

Don't be too hard on yourself. Horses (all sizes) can find some of the darndest ways to get them selves in trouble and we just cant forsee every eventuality no matter how hard we try. I'm glad to hear everyone is going to okay in spite of this stressful event.
