    Barley in horse feed

The old cowboys used to say barley was a 'toughener' for stamina and oats were to keep the energy level up for horses that were being worked really hard.

Do you feed hay in trailer while traveling?

Hauling to Nationals took us two days. They were fed breakfast and dinner just like at home. We did keep water in front of them at all times, but not food. They did fine.

    Barley in horse feed

On the ranch we fed the horses half rolled barley and half oats during round up when they were being worked hard. They did great and stayed in good shape.

Performance horse age - when is it time to retire?

Well my friends had won a Top Ten at Nationals in halter one year with a 20 year old stallion. I have known many driving horses still competing well into their late teens to 20. I think it depends on the horse.

    My fewspot stallion

Yes, I got him from Diane at DRK. Both his sire and dam are loud leopards as are many of his grandparents. How could he not come out homozygous? LOL I am pretty pleased with his first two foals, a colt and filly, both loud colored and black and whites, so we will see what arrives this...

Are there breeders not breeding for the Arabian type

I have personally NEVER seen a Mini that I would truly 'mistake' for an Arab, lol I do like that the heads are becoming more refined and prettier. I like driving and performance so that is what I breed for but am a stickler about a nice head too. I like a horse that is refined, yet has...

To tie or not in a trailer

I have ALWAYS tied mine as I know of two others who had a fatal and a near fatal accident from not tying them. I tied mine before that but that just convinced me..............

    Pregnant horses seizuring

I would also be feeding pregnant mares alfalfa (that's all that is fed here pretty much anyway). Calcium deficiency can be fatal. Do you have another vet to ask? I too would be doing blood work to check!

    Appy Color? Please Explain...

In the big Appy world he would be considered a blanket and spots with 'lightning marks' on his legs. (And I really like him a lot!!)

Coat Color and Pattern likes and dislikes

I am an Appaloosa lover of all patterns first and foremost and stick with the red, bay and blacks. I would have to say leopards are my favorite pattern, with near leopards or blanket and spots a close second. I dont care for dilutes at all. Silver is not a favorite color either but my old...

    Appy Color? Please Explain...

Am at work right now, but will post some pics later when I get home. Keep in mind, just like with pintos, to be homozygous, both parents have to be Appy. Also, an Appy can carry more than one pattern. They can have a blanket and spots pattern and also carry and have the varnish roan.

    Dental Work

We have Carl out here every spring and I have ALL mine checked regardless of age. Some might need a float, some need nothing and he doesnt charge to check and not have to do anything. I must say that I think dental care with horses is one of the most overlooked and neglected things and have...

How to show, what to feed, and how to prep.

In regard to feeding show horses- I dont really change anything on mine. As long as the horse is healthy, fit and in good shape, they should look good for the ring also.

    introduction

In answer to your question about fencing, it depends on what grade of chain link you use. If its the cheap flimsy stuff from Home Depot, etc.. dont bother. I went down to Western Fence and invested in 9 guage chain link. It is 'industrial' strength and mine looks as new as when I put it in...
