    Pasture intake per hour

Good idea. Will give it a try today!

    Pasture intake per hour

I weigh both my mini's and riding horses' hay and am now starting to let them out on a pasture. We are up to an hour a day now. I read on Kentucky Equine Research that a horse willl eat about 1-2 pounds of dry matter per hour. I haven't found anything breaking the amount down per hour for a...

    Stud (lead) chain advice

My gosh! I didn't even think of a rope halter. It's what he came with. I stopped using it because it was so difficult to tie due to his bushy mane. But I'm going to get back to de-senitizing him to the clippers so he has a bridle path. Duh. Thank you!

    Stud (lead) chain advice

Thank you everyone. Have posted a picture of Eddy. After reading all your posts I've decided not to go with a stud chain. Eddy is just not scared of things. You're all right--of course a strange dog jumping out of the vet's rig would scare him. I think I'll work on improving our connection...

    Stud (lead) chain advice

I agree with my vet not controlling his dog. Eddy is not scared of weird objects (like a chipper and a weird looking pile of cut up tree) that lots of horses would be afraid of. I've been leading him up and down our driveway and he leads just fine. He's just worried about new people---and...

    Stud (lead) chain advice

My quite new 11-12 year old rescue mini had to go to the vet a few days ago. He almost got away from me when the vet's dog jumped out of his vehicle. Then whenever a dog came out of the small animal clinic building he was on high alert. The vet thinks he's been chased by a dog when he and his...

    Training for connection and respect

Thank you. Someone else responded similarly and since then I've thought "he's going to come to me" rather than "he's going to play hard to get" and it seems to work.

Thanks for your reply and for answering my other question about whether they all have pony in them. The rescue I got Eddy from said she thought he had some pony in him. Sounds like they all do.

    Training for connection and respect

Thank you! He will approach me on occasion. I've had to halter him because he has an abscess and I need to soak his foot (he stands patiently and even lifts his foot for me to put it in the tub). He will then turn his head and check me out. He's definitely not scared of me. I wonder if...

    Training for connection and respect

Mindy, thank you for your reply. Would you elaborate on "teaching them to catch you". I'm guessing you are meaning walk away from them or at least just have your shoulder pointing towards them and get them to come to you? Thank you.

    Training for connection and respect

Thank you. Funny thing is Eddy didn't seem to know what to do with treats when I first got him. He wasn't interested in bits of apple and rolled peppermint treasts around in his mouth. He is now liking then,.

Thank you. I see what you're saying now.

    Training for connection and respect

Taz, how do you respond when they show stress indicators--I believe you were referring to turning the head away or looking away from you as stress indicators. Thank you.

    Training for connection and respect

I rescued a mini (38" high but the rescue thought he had some pony in him) about a month ago. He wasn't trusting and hated to be approached and have a halter put on him. We've made great strides in accepting the halter. He picks up his feet now without me asking. Basically when he is haltered...
