I had the same problem on both my mares. When I bought them, they were covered in lice. The best thing to do, IMO, is to shave them with a full body shave, and then to dust then with lice powder afterwards. All of the lice were gone within one week for me.

The mucus cleared away by the evening, but this morning it came back in the other nostril! It's gone now, but I'm guessing she just got dust in it or something. I was cleaning out all the stalls, so maybe that is what it is.
