Difference in temperment between ponies and minis?

I work with draft horses. They have a reputation for being gentle, unflappable, and have a great work ethic. Have I seen a good number of very hot ones? Yes. Have I seen ones that are sissies about pulling anything? Yes. Have I seen ones with rotten or aggressive temperaments? Yep.

    Irises

They really don't need much care once they're established. Pretty hardy.

Difference in temperment between ponies and minis?

I haven't found an overall difference... They vary greatly according to the individual. Basically they are all small ponies

    Foaling...Standing Up?

We had a large horse here lie down to foal against the stall wall and had to drag her into the open. It was a draft horse in a 16x24 and just not big enough for her. I think 12x12 is the smallest I'd go for a mini too... Bigger if at all possible.

    Sick horse??

If it's been chronic, I'd have a vet out. Could be allergies or something.

    Shaving the mini for showing

What type of show are you wanting to show at? If your horse sheds out very slick, you may be able to get a couple months in mid summer without clipping.

What Is The Future For The Miniature Horse?

Maybe I'm not seeing the same things.... The ASPC minis have been around a long time and they were really a force at nationals back in the late 90's so it's been a good long time. I'm not seeing the horse market as very slumped... But what exactly is an "ideal" price for a mini? $1,500...

    Foaling...Standing Up?

The smallest stall I've had my mares in was 12x12 and that seems pretty decent for foaling in my opinion. The shetland mare was in as 12x24 and that seemed more appropriate... The more room the better.

    Foaling...Standing Up?

I guess it would depend on how large your stall is and how big the water pail is? I have seen a mini foal standing up... But in a big enough stall they tend to stay away from the walls.

    Irises

Nothing wrong with Thornbird... It's a classic! The color is pretty odd... It is a smutty palomino color with a little bit of lavender on the bottom portion. My mom just feels it is not a bright enough color... She likes the bright purple ones.

    Irises

Bearded iris? I've got "thornbird"... Probably could send you some rhizomes as my mom hates them. I think they're pretty. To each their own.

    Hoof troubles

I would get X-rays done. A yearling is awfully young to have that abnormal of hoof capsule abnormality! I would get X-rays done. A yearling is awfully young to have that abnormal of hoof capsule!

    Foal with eye discharge.

Just one eye? I'd be concerned too. I rescued a mini with chronic discharge in one eye. Vet tried to flush it and discovered he was born without a tear duct in that eye. Instead of surgery I just used saline to clean him up daily. Could be something like that?

    veggie garden, tips anyone?

You can put cardboard or newspaper down and cover with a very little bit of dirt. If weeds grow, their roots will be very shallow and easy to pull up.

    New addition to the farm

Does it make a difference if your mini is an Appaloosa or an appaloosa?

I messed up and onyx is hurt

The faster you can get a vet out, the more likely some bad areas can be stitched. Also, the vet will likely put her on antibiotics of some kind... Both oral and topical.

    My hair needs help

Not sure about Show Sheen... Being silicone based it's not great for very regular use. The EQyss similar product is not silicone based and I've had good luck on my horses.

    My hair needs help

My hair is usually down around my rear and I do cut 12-18" off when it hits that length every year or so and donate. Hair length and quality is genetic, I believe. I use herbal essences clarifying shampoo and Pantene conditioner. We had very hard water for a long time and soft water now for...
