    How much hay?

Horses of all sizes eat 1-2% of their body weight. The richer the hay (alfalfa versus grass), less is fed... The more active or growing the horse is doing more is fed... Other factors such as weather... The average horse weighs 1,000 lbs and thus the average is to feed 7 pounds twice daily...

    How much hay?

I also feed by weight but also supplement my guy with alfalfa pellets and a ration balancer. He weighs 375# and eats 450# of Timothy hay in a month so I'd go by an estimate of 2% of their body weight as suggested, too...

    Belly sweats

If belly sweats truly worked, I'd get one for me! Women everywhere would wear them on their bellies and thighs ;) That said... Proper diet and exercise works best for horses and humans alike.

    Round pen size

Paintponylvr.... Unrelated but I'm looking for a harness for my 46" shetland like the one in the tire drag photo. Where did that one come from? My modern needs to drag the arena occasionally I'm thinking

    Round pen size

Our arena is small, 90 x 90... So in between round pen and large arena size. Works pretty well because horses can move out and even gallop and you can even hook and drive. A 50 or 60 foot is standard though for big horses and 40 would work for minis. Most make do with what they have!

Homemade or purchased toys for dry yard entertainment

All the big horses in my barn have the "Amazing Graze" from drsfostersmith.com but I think it might be a little large for minis. The hole is a little large, so we duct tape it halfway closed. They are great though.

Does this look like a good starter harness?

A higher end harness will last longer, fit better, and retain resale value if you take good care of it. Spend as much as you can on a harness, even if it's a starter harness.

    Rose Parade

Look up Scripps Miramar I think? They have pinto saddlebreds and minis that are almost always in the Rose parade.... http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=iDVIxaLpl0E&desktop_uri=%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DiDVIxaLpl0E

    Nursing Problem.....

It could take a while. There is a weanling filly and colt andalusian pair at my barn... The filly "nursed" on the colt's sheath for almost three months before giving up. He didn't seem to mind and he's younger by three months.

As anyone tried Chia vs Physillim and what is their opinion?

It's the laxative effect of a product which removes sand. Chia seed, like flax seed, has a hard hull and is very small so unless ground up, will not have any of the health benefits you listed. However, it's the indigestible hull which creates the laxative, so grinding will release the nutrient...

Are you done your Christmas shopping?

I'm very sorry for your loss. I shop for Christmas year-round so that I can give thoughtful gifts (instead of wracking my brain last minute... If someone mentions something they like, I get it), don't strain my bank account, and spend December wrapping and just relaxing and enjoying the season...

Performance horse age - when is it time to retire?

Awwww... I loved watching Mr. G at nationals! What a grand old man!

How important it the mane for a show horse?

Your trainer will be able to tame it down and it likely will grow some by show season so don't stress about it.

    Clicker training treat question

My pony will do anything for a stem of hay, so I think it doesn't really matter.

    Clicker training treat question

    Alfalfa or alfalfa/oat pellets.

    Barley in horse feed

Why are you feeding it? Does your horse need extra calories?

    Mare covered by stallion...not ideal

What has already been mentioned, I'd do.

    Barley in horse feed

Neutral. Oats, barley, and most grains are neutral to me. Anything in moderation as part of a balanced feed program is my rule of thumb when feeding my horses or my children :-). If an individual intolerance comes up, then it's time to deal with it.

    Higher farrier service rates

I've paid anywhere from $25 to $50 per trim. Currently paying $40. My horses are haltered, held, clean, well mannered (if they aren't I tip the farrier!) and we've got a covered, concrete pad for them to work on rain or shine. If I were you, I'd inform current clients of the price change and...
