Highly reactive filly - training question

I have a pony filly that I've started ground work on, in preparation for driving. She is smart and willing and has done surprisingly well, except she is overly reactive to SOME things. She was sold to me as a 9 month old because the owner said that she was too reactive to be a therapy pony...

    Picking a harness

You can't lose with Comfy Fit. The harnesses are well made (in the USA) and are really nicely padded. The customer service is great, too. They won't quit until you're happy. I have three minis and all three have (finally) been upgraded to Comfy Fits. The Deluxe Deep V breast collar is a must for...

How do you store your harness?

Photos, as requested. The black feeders cut in half are my favorite because they keep the saddle and breast collar in a nice round shape, similar to the back of my mini. The coffee "cans" keep the poll of my bridles rounded, too.

How do you store your harness?

I just redesigned the inside of my tack room and I'm really pleased. I have 4 harnesses to store. I cut some old black rubber feed pans (the flat ones with 4" sides) in half and screwed them onto the wall, curved side up. For the bridles and reins I screwed a plastic coffee container on the wall...

Steel or Aluminum for mini carriage?

I've visited your website before and didn't see anything like the Tadpole. Didn't see anything other than carts. Can you send me some photos? Did you mean to say that your rig weighs 130 or 300 pounds?

Steel or Aluminum for mini carriage?

Thanks, Jaye. That's just what I wanted to know. Is that a TAdpole in the photo? You bought the team pole for it? Is it worth $600?

Steel or Aluminum for mini carriage?

I'm having a little one person carriage built for my 37" minis. What are the pros and cons of steel versus aluminum? Is the lighter weight of the aluminum carriage going to affect how it can turn corners at speed? There will be no footman and I'll be riding out in the woods and on forest service...

Team Driving with Easy Entry Cart - Help Needed!!

The draft horse people that I spoke with suggested that I use a Running W (or was it a Flying W?) for the colt that rears in harness. It's a trip line used to pull their front feet when they rear or bolt. I got the impression that all of the mule people, and maybe most of the horse people used...

Team Driving with Easy Entry Cart - Help Needed!!

Ah, yes, your photos look familiar. My guys didn't get that tangled up because I had their outside traces attached to one another across their butts. They couldn't swing their butts very far from one another. I was wondering if some sort of tie down or martingale might help the rearing colt...

Team Driving with Easy Entry Cart - Help Needed!!

I, too, drive singles and want to drive a team. I, too, have an easy entry cart. I also just bought the team harness conversion kit, but mine attaches further back to the saddle, rather than the neck. Perhaps you could add some straps that would allow you to hang the weight of the poles from the...

Driving in Shows - Etiquette and Advice, please.

Thanks, all. I accidentally reversed on the diagonal correctly the first time, but then followed the person in front of me for the second class (assuming that it wasn't her first show, too) and we all ended up criss- crossing in the center, like some Drill Team maneuver! If the Ring Steward...

Driving in Shows - Etiquette and Advice, please.

I competed in my first Open horse show this last weekend and a couple of things happened that I need advice about. First; while in a Pleasure Driving class of 4 ponies, one of my reins got stuck on my shaft. I didn't know what to do, so I did what I do at home - I reached forward with my whip...

Reins get caught on shaft - help!

UPDATE: I had a harness maker make me a nice neck strap with rings for the reins that really helps with keeping the reins high enough to not catch the shafts. We attended our first show on Saturday and he got excited and managed to turn his head in such a way as to get the rein stuck right there...

Reins get caught on shaft - help!

Thanks, Horsenaround. I came to that conclusion, too, although I've never seen a strap hung from a mini's neck in the show ring. I'm on my way to see a harness maker this morning. Zilco makes an adjustable neck strap ring which I would love to have, but don't have enough time to get before the...

Reins get caught on shaft - help!

My young mini mule is going to his first show in less than two weeks. He does great at home, but a trial run down to a neighbor's arena showed that he won't stand still for more that 3 seconds and he rubber-necks and gets his reins caught on the shafts - a lot! My harness doesn't have rings on...

    Versatility Class unharnessing advice, please.

Thank you, so much, for sharing your system and experience. I need to find a halter that doesn't interfere with how the bridle and bit fit my mini so that I can leave the halter on under the bridle. The brass connectors or knots seem to be in awkward places in relation to the bridle. I don't...

    Harness Lining Options

I hate the thick, fuzzy, and hot removable pads that are so common under mini's breast collars, saddles and girths, but since I cross country my mini I feel that I need something to ensure that he isn't getting rubbed. I don't want bulky or hot materials, though. My harness is fine for a show...

    Versatility Class unharnessing advice, please.

Just to be clear - at home most of you harness your ponies while tied in a halter; then you tie the halter around their necks and bridle them; then you hitch them. I'm not sure if you tie them with the reins after being bridled, but must assume that you don't tie with the reins and they are...

    Versatility Class unharnessing advice, please.

Thanks for the advice. I printed out your instructions and will try it the next time I harness up. I never considered dividing the work front and back, instead of left and right. The only problem I foresee is having the halter fastened around the neck while the reins and side checks are still...

Anyone ever modify the suspension on their cart?

Update on my suspension problem: My new motorcycle tires finally arrived. I replaced the 20" bike tires with 24" motorcycle tires. I can't honestly say that the ride is any smoother, though. The wheels are more substantial and probably safer, but also added more weight to my cart. In theory...
