    6 mo booster

I ALWAYS vaccinate my pregger mares approx. 1 month prior to foaling...and have never had any problems. This is so the foals can get the immunity from the mare's colostrum. If you don't vaccinate prior to foaling, you must then vaccinate the foals much earlier. I know several breeders are...

Hmmm is it a little early?

Gosh....it's hard to say, not knowing your mares. They all follow their own routine. I have two mares who are both at 304 days right now, who are just beginning to "loosen" up around their bag area. And one of these mares has had most of her foals from 299 to 310 days! (altho, she went 334...

Using pellet stove pellets for bedding

Pelleted bedding IS wonderful. My point was, I would only use the kind that is manufactured for use as horse bedding. It appears that "some" wood pellets sold as fuel, are suitable for bedding as well. But you MUST do your research first to see if anything at all has been added, and/or...

Using pellet stove pellets for bedding

Many wood pellets sold for stoves also have chemical excellerants added! Very dangerous for horses. I would never use any wood pellets manufactured for wood burning stoves.

    I'm so bummed

Whoa! I hadn't aticipated this. I am also going to be going thru the same thing this year, as I am getting married soon. Didn't figure it would be such a hassle to change my last name on the horse's registrations! As far as leaving them in my maiden name....that's OK with me, as long as it...

    Which colors to test for?

You are right, he cannot be homozygous black (2 copies of the black gene) as his dam is Palomino & doesn't carry the black gene. As far as the white spots go, they are probably connect to whatever pinto gene is causing his facial white...Sabino or Frame (LWO). There is such as thing as...

    Pyrenees Pics

They are adorable Tony......just like my Panda & Barney when they were little! Pyrs are big dogs...but do come in varying sizes. Panda is on the big size, being 150+ pounds in his prime. Barney, on the other hand, will do good to see 100 pounds. Pyrs are the absolute best dogs I've every owned.

If you *think* your mare is aborting but are unsure,

Well...CRAP! I hope that by now, whatever she is doing is over & she is OK.

    Lilliput Acres Perfectly Gold

I am so sorry for your loss. I, too, lost a beautiful mare a few years ago that had been my friend for many years...she was the mare I started with. My darling Missy passed at age 20, due to complications foaling. I also put a tribute to her on my website. So, I know the heartbreak you...

what causes white hairs on a horses?

The "roaning" you see on your mare is most likely coming from Sabino. (not true Roan). I see she also has white markings on her face, so there is something else going on besides Tobiano...and that, again, is probably Sabino. I have lots of sabino roanin in my herd...and it looks just like...

    Corn Cob bedding........anyone tried?

I tried the corncob bedding too.....and hated it for all the reasons already mentioned. Give me the pelleted bedding or bulk shavings any day! Just wanted to add.....there are probably different brands of corncob bedding, and some may be better than others. The one that I used was very dark...

    Help with Horse Color change

Judging from those pictures, I would say she is black. The reddish look is probably just sunbleaching. I have a black mare who also gets "brownish" looking on her body in summer. If you mare were indeed bay...or even black/bay, she would have brownish hairs around her muzzel & eye....and I...

    Rivendell Miniatures on Marestare

Thanks for bringing this to our attention. Shannon also has "Ivy" on camera (Kickapoo's I've Been Mooned). It's good to see my girl again....and maybe will even get to see her deliver! She's due March 17th. Maybe she'll have a St Patrick's baby?

    Halter class question

This horse is not a pinto. That marking would have to have white skin underneith to be considered a pinto marking. It looks more like a Sabino "roan" marking, that I'm sure has dark skin under it. IMO, those judges who told you that you were in the wrong class, need to brush up on what...

    Halter class question

I would always show a horse on how it "appears".....not what it is genetically. Why would you want to show a horse that is technically a pinto, but appears to be solid, in a pinto class? It would just be a waste of money, as it would not place well in a pinto class. I don't think the judges...

    How do you cope with...

Well....I don't really have a problem of the pea/poop freezing to the ground so much. But I DO have a problem with how to clean out the stalls, as we've had so much snow this month, I can't get our manure cart outside to dump! We've had drifts up to 6' high all around the barn...so the horses...

    Question About Homozygous Black Horses

Yea....I figured that was what you meant to say, Robin.
  18. Dona

    Color question

OK....with dark eyes, he is definitely not a double dilute. He is most likely just a light Palomino.

    Question About Homozygous Black Horses

I'm sorry Robin, but you are wrong here. Maybe you "meant" that a visual Silver horse is a black based horse, I dunno...but let me clear this up so people don't misunderstand. Silver is NOT black. Silver is not a color, it is a "modifier" that only AFFECTS black. A true Palomino cannot...

    Color question

No....not possible. To get cremello...both sire & dam would have to pass the creme gene to the foal. A palomino would have one copy of creme, but a Sorrel would not carry creme. Either the wrong stallion is listed as the sire of the colt......or the colt is not Cremello. Does the colt have...
