    SPRING TRAINING

It finally dried up here and got warm enough that I didn't need 90 pounds of clothes to work horses. These 2 little guys are starting to learn to drive. I start them in the drag, then intoduce the cart once they are steady in the drag. Both were pretty good, just a couple of times they break...

Ok, yes and no to the above. In my totally honest opinion, I have a "park action" type breed. There is no way I could even attempt to get my leggy, necky pretty nice (IMHO) mini to trot like my hackney. I could use all the "devices" known to mankind, and he will never do it au natual, and...

    Breeding a Mare

Desiree..you are soo right. If the horse (be it mare, gelding or stud) ships well.. that is key. Mirage lost about 25 pounds...thank heavens we were not breeding with him at the time!. Know your horse..that is the key!

Thanks Boinky..haw many of you can tell you are looking at a blooded Arab? Blooded Quarter horse? Standardbred? Why can you? Years and years of selective breeding, based on a type or standard that was created many many many years ago, and yes you get the oddball (ie color) or fads (honking...

BINGO..you can have a mini "arab type" mini "Thelwell type" or a Shetland "hackney type" or Shetland "Thelwell type" The difference, about a hundred years of breed specific bloodlines that can be traced back to Scotland. For the Shetlands that is. Minis?? Well it could have been a short POA...

    Breeding a Mare

IMHO..I see no difference in showing a pregnant mare versus one maybe on regumate. Sometimes bred mares end up being better show horses. You showed your mare with her foal last year?? Seems like she was fine right?? I have shown many pony mares that were in foal ...get her shots up to date...

    Spin-Off Westminister

Funnybunny... BINGO we have a winner! Those wonderful comments you posted are exactly my sentiments of why the dogs "left" the ring. I guess I could have re-iterated better in my original post, but the 2 dogs are superior examples of their breed. I myself, would, knowing that Peter Green was...

    Spin-Off Westminister

Now maybe the horse/mini/pony judges out there should take a page out of Mr. Terrier (Mr. Green's) book. He dismissed 2 dogs (Airdale (sp) and Cairn Terrier's) due to conflict of interest with their handlers. If the handler won't bow out or hand over the dog to someone else, than kudos to the...

    Horse Abortions

Yes Desiree there is a shot the vet can give. You can actually give it at anytime, it just means the later into a mare's preg the harder it is on her. My vet calls it a "Hot Shot". It is also given to force a mare into season within a day or two of the shot. Kim

Thank you Aloha Acres & The Hutchinsons

She is definately well bred on her sire's side. BTW usually when listing pedigrees the sire is noted first. I had the pleasure of seeing Centerfold win the World's Grand Championship when he was three and again @ 15 or so. He was the first Hackney to win the Junior Champ and then the Grand...

    Snow babies

Oh Dona... I still think this is my FAVORITE horse of all time. I have loved him since you first posted him has a bitty baby. If he EVER needs to find a home, my home is his. I'd kill to have him, I can just see him in a patent leather Freedman Harness (world's best) and my black/gold...

    Hackney Pony

Welcome to the Hackney World! I have always had Hackneys, and just luv em! At 48" she could fit into anywhere from a 60" to 63". My 50" pony wears a 60, mind you his back is short. She must have been bred by Jimmy Miller or Anna Marie Knipp (PS saddly Jimmy Miller just passed away). Would...

    Pessoa Training Aids

I am with Fizzy on this one. Fixed contraptions can and will do more harm than something you can operate. Horses will lean on the bit, evade the bit, round the wrong way to evade etc. My hands/eyes are faster than a fixed idea. See my post in the bitting rig topic to see my longlining set...
