    New stallion...questions...and critique

He does appear to be a dark chestnut with possibly some sooty countershading. I don't think he's silver, since his mane appears to be too yellow and he doesn't seem to have white eyelashes. His white chin indicates some type of sabino in there. He doesn't seem to have much indication of splash...

    When to Geld

I think its been 'fairly' well proven in dogs anyway, RM. I have sort of proven it also in my own dogs. Those neutered very early, grew a little narrower and taller, (higher on the leg) than their whole siblings and sires and dams. Lizzie

    New stallion...questions...and critique

I really like this boy and would be happy to own him. I think he's nicely balanced, smooth and in lovely condition. Not overly refined and not too beefy either. Neck sweating will make him look even better. Like his colouring too. Appears to be tobiano but no doubt, is hiding other colours. Do I...

    When to Geld

Certainly geld any horse/colt, which isn't or should not, be breeding quality. We try to geld when flies are not a problem and geld all colts before sale, unless being run on as possible breeding quality. Way too many whole colts and stallions out there, being sold whole, when there is a huge...

Does My Mini Look Like She Could Be Show Quality?

Almost any horse 'can' be shown, Kay. Some ribbons won in small local shows or shows when there is maybe only one in the class, really don't mean much. However, it's all good experience, for the horse and handler. In larger, more important registry type shows, a win or being in the ribbons...

    Is something about to happen?

But only if we let it. The US has closed the barn door only after the horse has escaped, too many times, in my opinion. Lizzie

    homozygous tobiano-colour experts

Handsome boy Genie. I'll bet he also some some form of splash and some form of sabino, hiding in there. With homozygous Tobianos, nature can play tricks on us. I have seen many tobianos who appear to be solids. Maybe just have a white sock or two. They are just minimal tobis. I've also seen a...

A Lot happening at Lost Spoke Ranch

Yikes Dawn, what beautiful little people you have there. I always love to see Catch in the ring and I see he's doing well in his private life. Many congrats. Looks like you are having a great year. Lizzie

    Buyers & Sellers, educate Me!

Field of Dreams and Carolyn have said it very well. Just like to add a couple of things. As a buyer and in any breed and for a stallion, mare or gelding, I want to see close-up pics, with the horse standing four-square on a solid surface and not stretched. In all, I want to see a pedigree and...

I don't think I'll be breeding next year

My daughter bred her last mare, three years ago and will probably not breed again. Sad really, to know that after four generations of horse owning and breeding, we will likely not see a fifth. Sad also, to see the once full barn, now standing almost empty. The last two Minis will be sold and all...

My mini has little or no frog and hollow hooves in the front!!!!!

Please don't refer to the horse forum, the thread was shut down because everybody was leaving awful comments on it. Absolutely and utterly untrue! Our administrator closed it down (and stated so) purely because she told you to start a new thread with baby pictures so that they wouldn't become...

My mini has little or no frog and hollow hooves in the front!!!!!

Kay. "All of the other farriers?" You said he was the only one. So there are other farriers. Have you tried others? If not, how do you know they do a worse job than the one you use? You say you show your large horses. If so, then surely you must know many others in your area, who own horses and...

    Someone is feeding my horses.......Update

My thoughts are that you should be more than concerned. I would be furious. Everyone involved, must confront this woman and insist she stop. Explain that each horse receives different feeds and she will be held responsible, if one becomes ill or dies. Many years ago, when I boarded my...

My mini has little or no frog and hollow hooves in the front!!!!!

I'm confused now. Is your farrier licensed by any of the farrier licensing bodies, such as the AFA etc? You said at first, he was doing a great job with your large horses, but just not the Mini. Then you said later, he only did a good job with the large horses, when you told him how to do it...

Serious Inquiries only... Do you feel this statement off putting?

I suspect giving the price and then adding 'Firm' after it, might discourage may from wasting a seller's time, joylee. There again, when a price is already very low and a buyer says they cannot afford that much, it would make one wonder how they could afford feed, tack, vet bills, farrier work...

My mini has little or no frog and hollow hooves in the front!!!!!

I'm so glad you found a reliable and knowledgeable farrier for this little girl. This especially, since I know you also offer riding lessons on this Mini. I remember on the other huge forum message thread, her feet were a bit long. Not as long as they are now, but obviously needing some quality...

    Showing geldings

Geldings are wonderful. Great to own and with none of the hassles stallions and mares can often present. We have also shown all our geldings. Through the years, we have also gelded all of our colts before sale, except three whom we thought would go on to be stallion prospects. Many breeds have...
