    Blue Eyes

As Jane said blue eyes are caused by Splashed White or Frame, but horses with those patterns don't necessarily have blue eyes themselves and their parents may not have blue eyes either. This isn't a case of the white marking gene being recessive, the gene is just minimally expressed. Many...

    Question about Sabino roaning...

Yes, Sabino roaning occurs when there are no other white markings present. In my opinion, this is the most minimal expression of Sabino.

    Lets See some Smokey Blacks

Here's one of our smoky blacks, he's a White Russian son. We also have a mare and 2 weanling colts that I believe are smoky blacks but I haven't had them tested so I can't guarantee that they are.

A branch off of Jacquee's Sabino Question

Yes this is what is considered Sabino roaning or "ticking". He's got quite alot of roaning, very neat! He is most definetly not grey, being 7 years old, you would have seen some changes in his color by now. You can see from the second photo that his tail head is black, there is no striping...

    Is Sabino a Pinto Gene???

Sometimes referring to Sabino as a "pinto" gene causes more confusion than anything else, especially when it expresses very minimally or occurs in breeds which do not have "pintos". I usually try to refer to it as a "white marking gene", don't know if that makes it any less confusing but when...

    Boomer

He is black, he doesn't really look like a smoky black foal. They usually have a tan underlying hue, his looks silver - very common for a black foal.

    Cream Gene Foals!

Out of our 18 foals only 3 are cream dilutes, 4 are silver dilutes and the rest are just plain ol' chestnuts & bays. Not a very colorful year for us, even the few pintos aren't very colorful. Here are the 3 cream dilutes... Palomino colt by a bay Buck Echo son and a palomino granddaughter of...

Can I see pics of your

Bay foals usually don't have black legs at birth, it's also very common for bay foals to have lighter hair in the tail, usually at the edges. As soon as she starts to shed her foal coat she'll have black legs. Since it's later in the year, depending on where you live, she may not totally shed...

    color question

Sounds like she is a Silver Bay. It's not uncommon for Silver Bays to have lines down their back, all of our Silver Bays have dorsal stripes that vary from quite light to almost dark enough to look dun. Important to remember thought that these stripes have nothing to do w/ dun.

    What Color Is She?

She looks like a Golden Brown to me. Golden Brown translates to Seal Brown + Cream or basically the same as a Buckskin except it's Cream on a Seal Brown base.

I just love this head/blue eye question

Blue eye(s) indicate Splash, from my experience blue eye(s)s are more commonly caused by Splash than Frame. His facial marking also tells me he is Splash because it is lopsided, that's the way Splash likes to arrange white on the face/head. Even at it's most minimal, (usually a tiny patch of...

    testing for color

Well one of Harley's parents had to have been a dun because he is dun. I'd have to see photos to be sure but I'm guessing the dun probably comes from the dam since silver dapple + dun is usually very easily recognized where as palomino + dun can sometimes result in light dun factor that gets...

    testing for color

Color factor testing is beneficial because it tells you things that you don't know about the horse or prooves the horse is or is not a certain color, it gives you a better idea of what colors that horse can produce in it's foals and with that information you can breed to horses of certain colors...

    Besides Shetlands

My "horse" (Mickey) is a (used to be registered) POA. His sire is Tough Plaudit and his dam is a Blackburn bred AQHA mare (who goes back to Poco Bueno, King, Peter McCue, Little Joe, etc.) I say "used to be registered" because I never made him permanent and I believe he went over the height...

    Are there Overo Shetlands???

By "overo" I assume you mean Frame? Actually in the pinto world (including all breeds) Frame is alot rarer than any of the other patterns, previously Splash was thought to be the rarest form of pinto pattern but since we know understand how it's controlled and expressed we're seeing it alot...
