    Driving help!

Hmmmm. Maybe give her some type of reward, be it praise, patting or dare I say it, a little treat when she is doing the correct thing. When she turns back or does an undesirable behavior, make a clear, loud noise and a quick tug on the halter/bridle, so a negative reinforcer. Another thought...

    Pair leaning in opposite directions.

Absolutely try switching sides. But you may find that an adjustment to the lines or pole straps still needs to be made. Good luck!

    Pair leaning in opposite directions.

Experiment with your coupling rein lengths. Hardy Zantke says if you take one rein back a hole, you must move the other horse's rein forward, then the reins will be more effective. Try lengthening the pole straps. And remember that the outside rein on each horse should have some feel on it...

    Driving help!

Have you spent time working in hand with verbal commands? How about double lunging or long lining? It may be that you mini isn't understanding what you want...doesn't yet "speak the language". And of course, ask for help. You could even seek the help of a trainer who is adept at ground work.

What is a good age to start showing a foal???

I think it depends on the horse. Are they bold or shy, are they physically ready or tire very easily, do they have any manners or haven't learned yet??

Gastric Ulcers / Hind Gut acidosis

We had a mini w/ colitis. It was recommended by the university animal hospital that she go on Assure Guard Gold, SuperSport (for added protein) and ProElite Senior grain. Also Tylenol was prescribed for any upsets, NO bute as that was what was believed to have caused the initial problem. The...

    Could this issue be colitis?

Recommendations for hoof boots for driving.

Hello all, I am a trail driver and CDE competitor here in New England. Sometimes the gravel roads or rocky trails are too much for tiny hooves so I use hoof boots. I have been using Cavallo CLB but I find that they fall off. I rasped down the big toe cap to make for a more natural break-over...

    Driving Carts & CDE

Consider using an open bridle, no blinders at all. Horses can see more and are more informed of what is coming behind them. It's a matter of preference and what the horse does best with.

    Driving Carts & CDE

I have shown extensively in CDE's and use a Bellcrown Aerolite. It presents well in dressage and fit well in my trailer by laying the cart back on the seat with shafts pointing up. I drive a 35.5" mini so the shafts aren't that long and don't hit the ceiling. A 32" mini would have even...

Cushings disease and wonky hair growth

Thanks for this. The only caveat is that I have to be careful with this particular minis sugar. She began presenting with signs of insulin resistance so I had to switch h her off the miniature horse & pony feed (which was labeled as starch & sugar controlled) and use a ration Balancer instead...

Cushings disease and wonky hair growth

Great idea about the hidden meds in the treat! My Scarlet will eat it in the grain but it sometimes gets missed so that idea may help. I will have to get her blood work completed again to be sure she is on the right dose. She is 35 1/2" and a CDE competitor. I need to be careful of her sugar...

Cushings disease and wonky hair growth

Thanks Abby. I think additional blood work is in order. I am new to this site and thought I was posting to the forum. How can I move this post to the greater view? Thanks again.

Cushings disease and wonky hair growth

My 15 year old mini was diagnosed with Cushings disease last fall and has been on 1/2 tab of Prascend ever since. I body clipped her winter coat off in April just before a hot spell here in the northeast and her hair coat has only now begun to grow back (June) BUT, it's only the whiskery guard...

    Driving Miss Consuelo

Have her teeth checked and perhaps an ACTH test for Cushings disease. That can cause a big belly and other outward signs like uneven shedding and poor energy. I have been using a Sprenger Nathe bit, very pliable 1 piece plastic. It may be too thick for this little one though.

    Driving pony bad behavior

It could be that this pony needs the guidance of consistent supporting outside rein pressure, not a lot, just enough to tell her not to turn her head. It will also aid to have some one lead her while she is being ground driven so she is shown the correct responses to your voice/rein cues. If...

    Got to drive!!

Driving a pair is twice the fun but yes, having another able horse person on the ground is a smart plan. Also, don't be afraid to switch sides as some horses go better on the left than right and vise versa. If their heads are up and fussing, it may be time to have their teeth checked. You will...

    Driving gloves needed

Try Correct Connect gloves. I love them and use them for carriage showing and ridden dressage. They are thin and have good grip without being sticky. They come in different colors too. Brown is appropriate for carriage driving as the gloves wmshould match the brown lines.
