A tragedy in Eureka Sunday as fire races through a horse barn killing at least 40 quarter horses. Only one horse survived.

It started about 6:00 Sunday morning at Eureka Downs in a barn known as the T-Barn. The barn contained 90 stalls.

The fire is costly with damage estimates around $1,000,000. But the loss goes further than dollars. The fire also took the 40 horses now unavailable for racing season beginning in May. For trainers, it's a disaster. One trainer lost 24 horses alone in the deadly fire.

Authorities have closed the area for further investigation. No cause has been given.

I copied this off the local news website.

OMG how HORRIBLE!!!!!!!!! Poor things Wish the article didnt dwell on the $$ though Wonder why such a large facility didnt have sprinklers? Dont know, maybe none or few do, seems to me they would.

How horrible! I just hate reading about fires and animals. I am surprised that they didnt have a sprinkler system in the barns too. Corinne
