Hello friends, perhaps some of you can help with a decision I need to make. James and I were out looking for some gas thursday to get ready for Rita; well we saw this adorable little chihuahua running all over the parking lot of a gas station that was out of gas but had lots of folks coming and going and stopping to walk their pets and just stretch their legs. This little dog was about to get run over and no one was claiming him. I got him and began asking if he belonged to anyone there. No takers. He has a gimpy back leg; holds it up like he is hiking his leg but the leg is turned full 180 degrees. He is very underweight but no fleas. His coat is in good condition. He is probably about 5 pounds and less than 1 yr old.

He came home with us and is doing very well. took him to the vet today and bad news. He has a severe heart murmur and will not live a lot longer. Vet said best thing for his leg would be to remove it but because of heart murmur he may not survive the anesthesia. And to know more about his heart it would cost $200.00 for echo gram test. We have already spent $200 for 2 xrays, heartworm test, office visit. Heartworm test was negative.

We don't want another house dog as our little Sadie is really a dog that does not get along with any other dogs.

the darling little boy is less than 1 yr old and pretty well behaved and so so cute; all solid yellow color. Slept in a dog crate/kennel all night without any crying. Has had just a couple accidents in the house but mostly goes outside when I take him out.

He does not appear to be suffering any right now. He gets along very well with his gimpy leg. Can climb stairs and go down them with not much trouble.

Would any of you consider euthanasia an option? I don't think I can find him a good home like I had planned since he has a bad heart condition. If we keep him we are going to get more and more attached to him; but that may be what we must do since we did rescue him. Seems like you try to do a good deed and now it's not working out well. We have no power at the house since Rita and he got so hot last night that I had to take him to a cooler location; I guess his heart condition lessens his abililty to withstand stress/heat.

thanks for any of your advice. I thought of trying other organizations for help but they are all overwhelmed with many other healthy rescue dogs from katrina and now Rita.

i would take him since i live near you but we saw a dog at heb and dad said no to that one so pretty sure he would say no again.

This is such a heartbreaker and you were so nice to take him home and take care of him.

Unfortunately since his quality of life and his length of his life has been compromised, under this situation, yes I would put him down. He'll atleast know that someone stopped to get him and that someone did love him even if it was such a short time.

Would any of you consider euthanasia an option?

Sadly, yes.

These are the tough ones.........as for the heart murmur depending on the cause this often isn't a death sentence BUT it does complicate procedures requiring anesthesia......what is actually wrong with the leg?........right now is definately not a good time to be trying to place old or debilitated animals when there are so many healthy ones that have been displaced........try contacting chi breeders in your vicinity (within your state and neighboring states) see if any of them have a reccomendation or can offer help.......other than that .....sadly euthanasia is an option and might be in everyones best interests.........

I guess if it were me and he doesn't have a long life ahead of him I would keep him and give him all the happiness I could. If he isn't suffering I would leave the leg as it is and his heart as well. I know you said you house dog now isn't the type to accept another dog but maybe he could have another part of the house. Bless your heart for picking him up and whatever you decide I know you have taken the time to think it over and do what you think is best.

Many different breeds have rescue organizations, have you checked to see if there's one for Chi's??? That may be an option?

I have a funny feeling that if you keep him and leave his leg alone (as long as it isn't bothering him) he'll live a long life! I also suspect that it is BECAUSE of his health problems that he was left where he was......

Wish I had an easy answer for you.....

! This was exactly what I was thinking!

I peosonally would just wait it out and look at it as God put him in your path for a reason. Mabey you can be the one person that loves him in his last days. Or you never know mabey after some time the right home will find you guys. It happens all the time.

I also need to say if he's suffering in ANY way I'd put him down. But if not I'd let some time pass with him and enjoy his company!

Good luck!

I really don't think you should euthanize him, number one because he isn't yours and two because when someone "rescues" it's a commitment IMO.

Please make every attempt to find his owner, find him a home with people who are willing to go the whole nine yards with him or turn him over to a rescue organization.

Oh this one really pulls on my heartstrings!!!!!!!!!!!!

I owned a darling little chihuahua Charlie. I adopted him from a really old, rundown shelter. He was pathetic looking. He was snappy and funny looking, he had a gimpy leg, a heart murmur, epilepsy, and was missing part of an ear.

I adored this dog and he adored me, we had the most amazing bond. He was horrible to everyone else. When I had to put him to sleep it felt like I had lost my right arm, I was lost.

He died of heart failure BUT lead a wonderful life up until the day before he died.

This little dog could life a wonderful, long healthy life as he is. If it was my decision I would not euthanise.

I wish I lived closer as I have many friends who are Chihuahua people!!!!

He would probably do great in a quiet home.

Have you contacted Chihuahua rescue??

Many rescue groups offer transport too??

Please keep us posted on this little boy

Oh and about his leg, I would leave it alone. My chihuahua would drag his slightly and he was fast, he could keep up with the big dogs!!

All Chihuahuas need is food, water and love, love, love and then a little more love and they return it to you with interest!!!!!!!!

This is such a sad post. I would never consider putting him to sleep because of a heart murmer. I would do the best I could for him and make sure he knows that he has finally found some love in this world even if its only for a short time. I am sure he already knows in his heart how much love he can feel from you and I am sure he would love to return it ..even if its only for a short time. Thank you so much for bringing this little fellow home and helping him the way you have. When you look into his little eyes you will see all the appreciation he has to offer you. Corinne

I would try a chihauhau rescue. If he just will not fit in and work in your home and the chihuahua rescue cannot help, then, sadly, i would consider euthanasia. this is such a sad situation and i can feel for the difficulty you are facing in making this decision! jennifer

Well, thank you all for your opinions and your well wishes; After further discussions with our vet I did follow her advice and we sent Cisco on to a pain free environment; that is over the rainbow bridge. I like to think that our previous long time german shorthair pointer family companion of 12 years, Echo, met him there.

He is missed but he received loads of love for the short time we had him.

I know my actions will not agree with everyone but I had to do what my vet thought was best . I do thank all of you and I understand the differences of opinions; I asked for all your opinions; I didn't ask you to agree with me on any particular choice.

Thanks again for your support and opinions.

You did what you thought was best!

That is what you have to do in these situations.

Although it is always sad to see a young one go he is not suffering anymore.

I respect you for caring enough to rescue him and try to help him at your own expense.

That was a kind and generous act.

Sorry but I totally disagree with you.

Sad ending for a little boy that could of lived a long life.

I think you did what you thought was best, afterall, nobody here understands your situation fully!! How wonderful for the little guy's last days to be filled with love! And i believe the rainbow bridge is a much happier place for him than where you found him!!

Thankyou for being so kind so him, we need more compassionate people in this world!

I commend you for following your vet's advice and taking the little guy in and loving him fully until he went to the rainbow bridge! Bless you! jennfier

I was given a two week old pup by a friend when her bitch died. you could tell something was wrong. It cost a little over $800 for all of the tests that were performed and the end was the same as your little guy. There are different degrees of heart murmurs. Some resolve themselves as a pup ages and some do not. Evidently your vet saw other signs that alarmed him or he wouldn't have suggested putting him down. I believe you did the right thing and you gave the little guy moments of happiness that he other wise wouldn't have known. Bless you for taking him in. And bless you for having the strength to make the right decision.

I think Fran said it all for me as well. It was obviously a hard call to make.

Blessings,
