I am part of an Animal Control Officer forum since I am in training to become one, this was a recent post of a mini killed by pit bulls - Video Clip

Then the next reply down was this:

"That's become a sport among pit bull fighters around here. They go to the auctions, buy two pony stallions, throw them in the back of a pick up truck, take them to the fight site, encourage them to fight. The loser of the pony battle then gets put in with a pit bull and fights the pit bull. Very sad. "

This was from a member located in Ohio.

How disturbing...to think you can consign your horses to an auction or sale and this just goes to show you literally don't know where those horses are going after they are sold. Maybe think twice about lowering prices to find a GOOD home instead of taking a horse to auction!

edited to add: I am in no way against auctions btw! Just a heads up!

Well, I hadn't heard this one yet, but sadly it doesn't really surprise me. There are just so many horrible people in this world. I can't imagine what it takes to make a person the kind that enjoys animal fighting as entertainment or as a way to make money. Is working at McDonald's really that bad? Is there really no other way?

It's disgusting!

Heartbreaking and Disgusting    .........Thanks for the head up but it doesnt suprise me either! I go to an auction and see all the sad looking horses and I want to buy them ALL, it is hard for me to go !!!

I agree, COMPLETELY DISGUSTING :smileypuke:

This actually happened about 10 minutes from my house. The dogs are still running loose and haven't been found.

That's so sad =( The photo's of the mini mare during the video clip were just depressing! I wish animal fighting and cruelty would just stop...it's so nice to live in a world where you hear all the happy stories but then these stories come out and it makes you realize there's not-so-nice people out there with bad intentions for these little horses...sad

You would think that someone in the area might recognize the dogs or know who owned them??

Wow, thats really sick and disturbing.

Its amazing that human beings can be so repulsive, If you can do it to an animal its just a matter of time before they can do it to human beings as well... sigh... I also feel for those 2 pit bulls, as thier owners obviously dont have control over them / contain them properly, if they are able to get out and do this. its also sad because once they get the taste for it, they have no inhibition, and will do it again. So they either need to be euthanized or placed into homes that have no other animals and where the person is familiar with the breed and thier problems.

Too bad there wasnt a magical way of screening people before they own an animal.

I'm sorry I'm a bit confused.

I agree that, if it is happening, dog fighting of any kind is deplorable.

Setting dogs on horses, which are peaceful basically non aggressive animals is also deplorable.

But what any of this has to do with some loose dogs attacking a couple of horses, whilst I feel deeply for the peoples loss, I fail to see.

And please could we avoid turning this into a Pit Bull bashing session??

So far it has not, I am relieved to say, gone that way.

Unfortunately experience tells me it is just a matter of time, though.

This case- the one on the video, is awful, it could happen to any of us and be any breed of dog- as far as I know none of the animals involved in Tony's awful case were PitBulls.

What has the video to do with dog fighting or auction sales????

What I THINK it means is some people get a kick out of causing these kind of attacks. I have 6 dogs and I love dogs including my Pit Bull who is the biggest baby of them all.......but I am a responsible pet owner......if you know your dogs are aggressive towards horses or any other animal they should be kept a close eye on and kept away from any animal they may harm. I had to find a new home for one of my dogs a few months ago because he killed my neighbors cat, I loved him but couldnt deal with that and I didnt want an angry neighbor to take it out on him.

I agree with New2Minis. I don't think that this is meant to be a "pit bull bashing" thread. I think that it was meant to be a heads up to people who are selling at auctions or privately. When the time comes and we want to sell any of our minis, there will be refrences and pictures of the facilities required.

I LOVE DOGS BUT, ANY responsible dog owner should keep their dogs well away from animals and well confined to a yard or area if they know that their animal will/wants/has tried to harm other animals. IMHO, if I have a dog that attacks another animal or person... the dog is either placed in a home where there are no other animals or there is just 1 person or if I can't place the dog because of the issues, I would euthanize the dog. I am not willing to allow a dog to harm other animals or people. We have delt with the results of a dog harming a colt and I have delt with a dog harming me personally. I don't ever want to go through that again. I have personally made the decision that IF I ever have a dog that is going to harm animals or people the dog will get gone one way or another.

I honestly believe that this thread was posted to bring awareness to people and not be about "bashing".

I agree lbsfarm- this was not meant to point at any certain dog or what is going on- just please be aware of where your beloved babies are going. The minimal price they will bring through the sale just is not worth it.

I'm sorry, that was probably a bit of a "red herring"- my point was really- what has the video clip of a horse attacked at random by two loose dogs got to do with organised dog fights and selling at auction??

I am genuinely confused.

It's ok Rabbits.... I think as an animal control officer in training, she was trying to make a point that these horses were attacked by 2 pit bulls and that some folks that own pit bulls and fight them are actually training them using small horses. So, could have possibly just strengthened the instinct for those dogs to attack these horses. (this is the way I am taking it) Also, as a heads up, for those folks who may think of taking their beloved horsie to the sale ring, that that may be where it ends up, and was using the video also to point out the horrible results of dog bites (however, I have seen MUCH worse)

I assume that she posted the video clip because the posting of that clip on another forum prompted a member to write in with the info that this sort of "attack" is deliberately staged by some sick people. It's not that the video of a random attack has anything to do with deliberately allowing a dog to attack a horse.

Discussion of one led to the information on another, plus....the video now shows someone what could happen to their horse should it be sold into the hands of one of these people who enjoy setting up dog attacks on horses. Unfortunately there are people out there who just don't think about what a dog can do to a horse, and especially to a little horse.

I think the link was posted on another forum that MiniHoofBeats frequents. Then after someone on THAT forum had posted the link, another forum member posted the warning that people are buying minis to fight and then the loser is fed to pit bulls. Sick sport!!!

Yes, thank you, you are all right! The video of the attack has no real link to the auction horses being bought for "sport" - it was just a spiderwebbed topic that someone posted below it and the fact is, I was first appalled to see yet another dog-attacked horse, but I wasn't even aware that dog fight trainers were using small stallions bought cheap from auctions to do the training! It saddens me to even think of it...i've been to a few sales and it depresses me to think any one of the beautiful (no matter how old or skinny) stallions at that sale could be future fight material...ugh...

And no this is not a pit bull bashing topic! I have friends with pit bulls who will roll over in your lap and drool on you all day lol. It's sad they're often targeted as just "generally" not pet material.

This was just to point out, please, re-think bringing your stallions to auctions! I think they target stallions simply because they are in tact and will fight if provoked...

I am wary of most things posted on the Internet... as a LOT (if not the MAJORITY) of things are posted to simply be inflamatory.

While this COULD be a "true story" I am going to be highly suspicious that it is a remote or isolated case.

Horse stallions only have a "reputation" of being aggressive. The majority are not. I haven't seen many stallions that are truly out to kill the other stallion. It would be difficult to pick up random pony stallions at an auction and then incite them to fight in a public setting (people cheering them on, to kill to the death). I can't see horses being focused on the other horse in a setting like that.

I am very dubious about the whole thing... to me it is sounding like "I found a link to a video that was posted on another forum that I got an e-mail with a link to a different forum and it said..."

As you see you will get many inflamatory responses here, but I just can't imagine it being feasible.

Andrea

Anrea, I understand your point of view, however this came straight from the mouth of an animal control officer from Ohio where this has been seen and noted - not just some pedestrian off the street.

I don't see stallions fighting just because, either, however we do know that two stallions put together with the scent of a mare in heat or even just provoked can and may fight. Look at bulls, tie a rope to cut off their "downstairs" and they go mad!

Stallions will certainly fight each other, even I think in those circumstances. There was a video on one of the TV shows that reports such things a few years ago showing a couple of full sized stallions fighting in a ring while bets changed hands...not in this country I don't believe, but it was awful. Had not heard the bit about putting a horse in with a dog to fight - beyond comprehension!
