Today I noticed my 4 year old orange cat was acting weird. I picked him up and he walked away and laid down. Not like him at all. Then he got up and stumbled around and fell over drooling. I took him to the ER vet and found out he had feline lukemia, but he was also poisoned with rat poisoning. I don't know who would do that, no one in our neightbor hood uses rat poisoning. I had to put him to sleep. He was my cat/dog. He followed me everywhere, I'd take a 4 mile walk and he'd come with me and follow me back. He'd ride in the car like a dog. He slept on my head every night. He was born white with orange ears and tail, as he got older he changed color to all orange with a small white spot between his back legs. He would play with our big dog Zoe and the kids could pick him up anyway and carry him all over and he didn't care. He never scratched anyone. He would even get in the shower with me on occasion to get clean. He washed himself all the time, he was my pretty boy. Here are some pic of him from a kitten to last year before we moved.

Milo you were loved and will be missed, I've never had a cat like you before and I know no one will ever replace you in my heart.

Ohhh I am so sorry!!! What a beautiful family you have and your precious kitty was a part of that ...I can imagine how heartbroken you are.

I was wondering.....could it be possible that he ingested a rat/mouse that had eaten the poison? Either way however it is very heartbreaking. I am so sorry for your loss.

I can't believe this world today.. I felt so sick when I read your post. I pray that you find out who did this to your cat. People can be so cruel!! Sending prayers to you and the family. It is hard enough to loose a pet, but to loose one like this...

I'm so sorry- if it makes you feel a little better I doubt very much it was deliberate.

There are a number of ways he could have got hod of this stuff but , unless someone deliberately took meat, smeared it in rat poison and fed it to him, a deliberate act is unlikely.

When you get something like this happen it is usual for a spate of "strikes" so a number of cats and dogs would be killed, not just one.

I'm sorry that your boy was in the wrong place at the wrong time, curiosity really does kill the cat.

If it is any help, I do think Jane / Rabbit is right and it probably wasn't deliberate.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I know because animals are sooo much a part of my daily routene it's truely heart breatking to loose one. He looked like a special boy who was very loved. Sorry again.

 breaks my heart, let us know if we can help.

we will be praying for you all.

I am sorry you lost Milo. Some animals touch our souls not just our hearts.

Rat poison is a nasty thing. Cats normally will not eat it BUT they will eat other animals that have. Most rodents do not eat much of the rat poison when some one puts it out. Like a typical rodent they hoard it. Then they die before the can eat what they hoarded. The stock pile of food can be stored for years in a nice dry place before some other rodent eats it up. Scary thought but if people in the past used rat poison there could be more of it hidden around your property that you will never know about. Another good reason never to use the stuff.

Aww as if yoiu haven't had enough, I'm so sorry but he ate a poisoned mouse not the poison itself. He was so loved, I am sorry. Bridgette was (still is) a very pretty girl in her youth.

I too am very sorry for your little cat's passing........That's a rough one. One of my very favorite felines in my life also died from the same thing many years ago. I still miss her too.

Hugs to you -- I know how you feel. I lived on a big farm for over a year -- and apparently in one of the barns (they had 8 barns) they poisoned the rats/mice -- -one of my cats who loved being outdoors must have eaten a poisoned rat - or some of the poison. I know they were not trying to kill my cat -- just the rats/mice at that barn. Nonetheless - it is very hard to lose one that way.

again - hugs and sympathy.

Awww, I'm so sorry. What a precious kitty. Losing a family member like that is just the worst.

I don't understand it. The summer before 6th grade, two kids in the trailer park abused one of our cats- I'll spare you details- but he came home to die, with bike tire track marks in his white fur.

He was an orange tabby too, and I've had a thing for Orange tabbies ever since.

I didn't understand it then, and I don't understand it now. I can't tell you how much it hurts to find out someone else has lost a beloved cat (esp. an orangie!) to such a thing- both your Milo and my Pooka were taken very young-

Oh, I'm gonna go before I cry. I'm sooo sorry.

I am so sorry. I am a cat lover and my heart goes out to you.

omg the same thing happened to me in july we get cats dropped off all the time out here. well we left for the fair that we camped at considering almost all of our animals were there. well we came home everyday to find one two or three cats laying in the yard or the barn by the end of the week we went from about 17 cats to about 4 and later we found rat poison on the back porch

Thanks everyone. I started to cry all over again from eveyones kind words.

Sterling- He doesn't eat mice or rats. He'll play with them and as soon as they run and hide he's done.

Rabbitfizz- That's just it everyone in my neighborhood has cats, no one uses rat poison. Last year my parents ( who we live with now) lost 4 cats and the neighbors cat all within a weeks time.

My other cats are the ones that catch and eat the mice, rats, moles. Never Milo. I have caught him playing with them and like I said as soon as they get far away or hide he goes and lays down. He was very special. I feel bad for Cassidy as he was her cat also and it was the day after her birthday that we had to lay him to rest. She's heart broken.
