My 17 year old driving gelding has arthritis and bone spurs. Vet suggested putting him on Adequan. We've finished the 7-injection protocol and I can tell he is much better. He was able to step out of the trailer more easily. And his eyes don't have that worried look.

Chiropractor visit this last week, and she suggested a dose once a month for maintenance. I will discuss it with my vet. But I'd like to know what others do who are using Adequan.

Once a month for maintenance is pretty common. Or, some horses can go once every three months, often combined with Legend. Unfortunately, we haven't been able to get Adequan in Canada now for ages .... hopefully it's back in stock soon!

I'm glad to hear it helped him!

We used adequan on some big horses years back. Once a month seemed to fit the bill for most of the geriatric patients.

Thanks for the responses. I've sort of been waiting to call the vet. Now I'll call Monday and ask about monthly, or maybe every other month. I sure want to keep my boy as comfortable as possible. Not a lot of folks around here use it, because of the cost.

Marsha, try one a month for a bit and then try going to every other month. It used to be cheaper if you purchased the entire box of four doses rather than one vial at a time.

That's approx. $15 a shot, I would say well worth it for your equine friend! Almost a 2 year supply at one a month for $300. If you try one a month during the colder months and every other month during the warmer months it may last longer.

Called the vet this morning and he said once a month. Good idea, during the winter!

My husband did the injections; the needle is very small and my horse didn't mind it at all. It was so good to see him able to climb out of the trailer more easily. Don't know what the future holds, but we'll take one month at a time.

I called the original vet who prescribed the Adequan to ask about my monthly regimen. She said to have the chiropractor check him to see how the arthritis is responding. I thought that was a very amazing referral! We have an appt next week.

He is not dragging the back feet but he had a really hard time getting out of the trailer after a parade we did recently. I will need to figure out a ramp for him.

I'm really trying to keep his weight down, too. He the air-fern type. It's a Catch-22--I need to restrict his workouts because of the arthritis, but then weight is the issue!
