Let me just begin by saying I am very new to minis. While I have driven and in general been around friends minis I as of yet do not have my own.

To get to my point, besides height, is there any difference between AMHA and AMHR? Is one considered better than the other, or is it more of a personal preference?

My horses are all AMHR/AMHA registered......in fact most are also registered pinto. I do that because I want the horses I sell to be more marketable because I do realize that people have their own personal preferences. Some will only show AMHR, some only AMHA. Since I breed for "A" minis, those under 34", if I had to pick just one registry it would be AMHA. I think AMHA is still considered the "gold" standard for the 34 and under minis.

Many people prefer one over the other (just depends on who you ask as to which it will be). I value them both, really equally. Most of my breeding horses (all but two mares) are AMHA/AMHR.

They are THE two main registries for miniature horses.

AMHR recognizes two height divisions with A Division or Under Division horses being 34" or less in height, and B or Over Division horses being those taller than 34" but not over 38" in height.

AMHA recognizes only the Under or A Division -- horses no taller than 34" in height.

Many miniature horses that measure 34” or less in height are registered with both the AMHR and the AMHA.

We only have three at the moment but they are all triple reg. with A, R, and Pinto. Some areas or states only have shows for one or the other. Kansas is predominately A while Wisconsin is only R. Having them double registered gives you a bigger market when and if you want to sell. Since the registration fees always seem to be on the rise, it's just easier and cheaper to register each foal double. We registered Pinto simply because we only have pintos and wanted to show Pinto. Plus Pinto (a this time) gives nice awards.

It is a personal prefernce as well as what seems to be available show wise in your area

I prefer to register AMHR and have not registered with AMHA for a few years now- just my own preference and while I do have some AMHA reg stock I have a over 34 in program so it works better for me - rather then register foals with AMHA just so they have papers when odds are strongly in there favor they will go over 34 in.

I wanted to come back and be kind of explicit on something, because I know that there are people new to miniatures who have been mislead as the the value of some registries.

With minis, 99.9% of the people who breed or show will only value AMHA and/or AMHR papers.

WCMHR, Gold Seal, etc., are essentially without value to most miniature horse people. I would consider a horse with only WCMHR or Gold Seal papers to be truly unregistered / grade.

Only pointing this out to potentially save someone from buying something that's not what it may have been represented to be in the eyes of most informed enthusiasts.

We have all our minis registered AMHA/AMHR for the market as well, but do like the AMHA because of DNA testing so hopfully what they say are the true bloodline .

I think both registries have their pros and cons. Some adamantly point out one side or the other. All of mine are registered both A and R. As some others have mentioned, if I could choose only one, it would be AMHA. In buying a horse, I may consider A only as a mare can then be "hardshipped" into R for $200 and a stallion for $400. But if buying an AMHR A division horse, it will cost $600 plus inspection fees to hardship a mare and $1,200 plus inspection fees to hardship a stallion.

I have to agree with Jill... I will only purchase horses that are AMHA or AMHR registered. At the moment I have only 4 double registered horses in my barn. The rest of them are AMHR registered with the exception of ONE WCMHR colt who will be gelded this fall...

IMHO, It's all a personal preference on which registry (or both) you want to go with.

i have 2 minis and they are both double registered.....My stallion will be registered PTHA too here soon. But I have to agree with everyone else...I won't buy a horse if its not AMHA or AMHR or both....

I agree with the majority of the other posters AMHA & AMHR are both important to us at the farm. The vast majority of our horses are double and sometimes triple registered by being in the pinto registry. Each organization has its strong point and I would strongly suggest that you consider a horse that is registered in both.
