Is the nationals for youth classes just a couple days out of the show or do you show the whole time. thanks

It is the first two days of nationals. Then the amateur classes begin and then open.

I am not absolutly sure, since I show AMHA but I only show on the weekends. I think that they made it that way so the youth dont miss that much school. but Im not sure if that is the same in AMHR.

99% sure they added a day to Youth at R nationals so it is Weds-Sat for 06. Didn't make it to Convention due to college but that is what I remember hearing. And the youth remember that you have to show horses that you plan on showing at Nationals at - at least one show (one class) to "qualify" now starting in 06 (from what I heard)

I really hope it won't start on Wednesday. It will be inconvenient to people (including my mom and I) who have to drive 25 hours not including breaks down to Oklahoma. I will be missing enough school as it is.

Starting Nationals for the youth on Wednesday means alot of school missing for the kids. I don't know why they couldn't have more youth classes on Sunday. Oh well guess alot of people would miss either way.

Reality if anyone was involved at the youth classes at 05 Nationals something needed to be changed, kids staying up past midnight was not a good thing

Well as a parent the way i see it personally is you cant make everyone happy.. if you add a weekend day then that pushes open back one day and people complain... if the kids are up late some people dont like that either..

Personally I get ravens school work, know she will have late nites and very early mornings, not eat very healthy that 10 days I just expect it. It is a National show and kinda comes with the territory.. I am just glad she will have these memories as she gets older

My dream is to go, but with my school's attendance policy I will have to miss a good chunk of it. I am allowed only 3 excused vacation days and 5 absence days.

Well with our registry growing in leaps and bounds they had to do something - judges and exhibitors and horses can't stay up till 4am and do the job as well the rest of the week as they could if it were all over say at 11 each night..........

And it is right that you can't make everyone happy. When I was in high school I played sports so I had to make up all the running I missed, I would get to school early before and after Nationals and run an extra mile or two. I would get all of my work and take to nationals or even just to it early and turn it in before I left.

Now I have been in college the last three years for Nationals and let me tell you it isn't a bit easier. As the professors DON'T care if you miss, some even as much as not even let you make up an exam, be there or take an F - "most" are nice and will let you take it early, but not like highschool where they have to let you make stuff up.

Even adults with work - have to get off...........

Nationals is Once a year - and we all just do what we can. My first year in college I just showed in open and had to leave to go back - had to have a special someone show my horses for open for me, not my choice, but oh well.

What is the open part of nationals?

I want to go watch this year. Our school allows 5 vacation days per semester and 9 'sick' days each semester. Our school isnt to strict on missing school really,

They werent really pleased these past 2 years with Raven missing school either but she is a good student and ahead of her grade level I sent the principal this year a copy of our add in the JOurnal so he can see that it isnt just a horse show it is something Raven works very hard for year round and is very important to her.. that helped them get it a bit more

Open classes is open to everyone!

Youth classes are strictly for youth.

Amateur classes is strictly for amateur.

Just want to add that the youth must show each horse they want to show at Nationals under TWO judges-- so that may or may not be just one class in one show-- some shows only have 1 judge-- so in that case theywoudl have to show each horse in 2 shows.

Jessica, I hate to tell you this but the reality is its going to take you more than 25

hours to get there. I only live a half hour from you and it takes me a total of 33

hours travel time to get there. It's a very long stressful trip on the horses so we

break it up over a couple of days. As for missing school my kids are extremely

lucky we homeschool as they don't even start until October. Most schools will

be lenient and send the work with you if you talk to them and arrange it with them.

The registry can only do so much, not everyone will be pleased with the way things

are set up. We have been going to nationals since 2000 and know there will be

late nights and not much sleep. I get less than the kids do, and I have to drive the

whole distance without a relief driver! It's a lot of work but a lot of fun too and its

something we look forward to all year. My kids will have awesome memories of

great people and great horses and the pride of being part of it! Linda B

So far (though my kids are young - 8 and 10 years old) but their school has been extremely supportive of them attending and competing at Nationals. I do talk to their teachers early on - like within the first couple of days of school and explain about it and the teachers have plenty of time to put together homework packets for each class for them to work on every day. The last two years when they got back to school they had worked ahead of their classmates in almost every class. Both of them have also done extra credit work - keeping a journal of their experience, doing extra reading and book reports and doing a presentation on their trip to their class when they returned. A local magazine did a feature story about them last year and both of them always bring a mini to visit their classroom a couple of times a year so their class knows all about how hard they work and what they do. We are at Nationals the entire time from start to finish so the kids miss almost two weeks of school. It will probably get harder when they get older and have more difficult school work, sports practices and club meetings to think about but we will worry about that when the time comes. Like Lisa said, I think the kids take a lot of positives away from working toward, preparing for and attending Nationals and it is a very good experience and is worth missing school. For our family, my husband is a workaholic so to get him away and with us at weekend horse shows and then for the extended trip to nationals is a family vacation and the kids love having his full time and attention.

Does anyone rent hotels ahead of time?

I was just wondering, where is it? and what dates is it?

I really want to go watch you all show. Unless i get my show colt soon and dad sells his QH ...i wont be able to show at nationals. Which i was hoping to do this year if i got the colt in time. Kay explained everything to me ..if i dont get to show, i at leat want to go watch her and you all have fun!

This thread is very interesting for us as our son starts Kindergarten in the fall. This year was our first Nationals and we have been wondering if we'll ever be able to attend again. We were wondering what people with kids in school did. We don't have anybody to send him home to after youth classes end and it's a two day trip each way for us.

I didnt read all the post so excuse me if Im repeating, Im looking at the 2005 program now and the youth started on friday morning and went through sat. So if they add a day it would start on thurs. Im just talking about the classes here. The youth judging is usually the day before the classes start.
